Hey guys, Just picked up a 84 VF 1000 F for a friend of mine. He doesn't know it yet, but he's getting this bike. I need to do some tune up things on it before he gets back off vacation, and I don't know anything about this bike. I would like to know the following,

    1. What type of engine oil does it use, IE 10W30? and how much?

    2. Does it use different oil for the tranny? and how much?

    3. Does it run on normal gas, 87oc, or does it need 91 plus?

    4. What type of plugs does it use, part numbers if possible.

It deosn't need any crazy parts put just a good tune up.
I'm used to the Buells, so these one are way different to me.
    Thanks for any info.

This is what I did with mine. 84 VF700F
Champion Plugs part #810 gap .035
Oil Valveoline 4 Stroke Motorcycle (motorcycle oil is important since the trans and engine use the same oil)
The filter I used was Fram PH6010a
Normal Gas seems ok to me but a bottle of carb cleaner in the tank wouldn't hurt. (whatever kind you like)
That is about it for a tune up others may suggest more or less but this is what I did and it seems to be everything.
You may want to check the valves if the milage is higher than 16K.

Can't go wrong with 10w-30,40 unless the temps outside are really different I would go with one of those.
The filter is in the front of the engine behind the radiator.

Thanks, I just drained the tank and put some new fuel in. Drained the carbs, and she fired right up. This old girl runs like a top. Now I'm kind of pissed that I'm giving it away, I hope it makes a good wedding gift for him. At least I have someone to ride with now. lol. Thanks for your help.

I hope that you tune her up too. Unless your friend is handy and will do it for you. Maintenance is very important after its been sitting a while.

The most likely big project thing that might need to be done on a bike that old, depending on how well it's been maintained, is (a) a good cleaning of the carbs, especially if you think it might have been sitting for a while, and (b) a valve adjustment. But, for purposes of a wedding gift, those are projects your friend will need to embark on. :)

Let's see a pic of the bike!!

He's not as good as I am with the wrenching so I know that I will be doing it all. I am going to tear the carbs off and clean them all. I just got the bike yesterday along with a KTM for myself. I will be going over the bike from top to bottom, but wanted to hear it run. I'm going to base line it for him so he knows where to carry on from. Or should I say, so I know where to carry on from. He's lucky I live just down the road from him. we are getting some snow today so I have a month or so to get it ready. I'm really impressed with this bike so far. I can't wait to get it out on the road.

OK, So now it works. ??? Not bad shape at all. I think that it will be a lot better once it's cleaned up. I was sitting in that place in the pic for a year with a piece of plastic on it. The good thing is that the guy stored it right. As you can see he put tape over the exhaust and did drain the carbs to. As soon as this snow goes away I'll be able to tell if it needs anything more after the road test.

Normally I am a proponent of a full synthetic oil but on a bike that old i would go with a semi-synthetic. Honda makes one, just dont get the stuff with Moly in it. My favourite i used for years is Golden Spectro. I dont know what your temperatures are in your area, but generally I would use a 10W-40 oil. I dont think 10w-30 is good enuff for warmer temps.

    Man that's a pretty bike!

Ya, I use full sync in my Buell, and in, well everything that I own. I still have to put Frontier tranny over to sync. I think that I will go with the semi in the VF, and a 10w30. Our riding season is going to start in a few weeks and goes anywhere from just above freezing to the high 30's. I think that is about 90-100 in the yanks unit of measure. I picked the bike up for just over 1000 USD. It was a steel in my opinion. That and it only has 32 000 km on it. It wasn't used at all. I think that it might become a street fighter type, but I think that I'm going to talk my friend in to leaving it the way it is. After I get it cleaned up I'll post a few more pics.

10w30 will be ok for now, but when it warms up you'll need 10w40. On those old VF's cam wear was a major issue. Find a manual if you can.

    Hey Dup...

All the info looks good but do yourself a favour and run semi-synthetic oil, really helps the rear bank of cams (which were the ones with the issues). Had a 1000 as a superbike and that really helped.
Also check the airbox, if it was stored as long as you say some critters may have made a home in there and cleaning it out will help prevent a headache.

We should all have a bud like this, nice.

Looks really good. And if the thing fires up you may just want to change the oil and the plugs. Check for loose bolts for the axles and tire pressure. 32 in the front 35-40 rear depending on your pant size. I use 40 PSI because I have a winter coat of 220 lbs.

Well I went and ordered some parts. I need to get a base line on it as I didn't have much info on the bikes life. I'm going with a semi-sync oil, changing fuel, oil, air filters, flushing the cooling system, flushing all the brakes, (mushy feeling), getting the tire balanced and just giving it a good cleaning. I drained the gas tank already. If it would just stop snowing up here I could take it out for a spin. I couldn't help it, yesterday I had to take the KTM out for a rip down the road. I'm jonesin to get out and ride.
