I have no love for KOA. I am more of a side of the road camper. Just ask SLOVFR. After riding all day I refused to pay KOAs BS prices so we found some random city park on the side of the road and put up the tent by VFRlight. Worked ok as far as I was concerned. Was a bitch finding coffee in OR though. In CA, you can swing a dead cat and hit a Starbucks but no so much up there.

I needed the power and water to charge up my electronics and to give me fuel to pee.

have wondered how a guy would know if it's ok to tent in a city park.

the so called "99%ers" don't seem to have a problem with it but I know places are passing ordinances left and right because of it.

I might need to make a 3day 1800mile trip 1st week in June and have been considering the tent option.

Some advise. An airmatress. And a BB gun for the peacocks!

ANd that is some hard riding to set up a tent afterwards.

Randy - how much does that back pack weigh? Does it make the ride a little more arduous?

Since Long has welcomed you into his home and his family's home, maybe you should just start leaving some clothes behind for the next trip. Make them give you your own dresser or nightstand. :)

I haven't weighed it but I think it weighs somewhere around 40 pounds. It contained a tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, pillow and rain jacket. And yes, it made the ride much more difficult. I travlled with as little as I could but I pretty much needed everything in those packs at some time or other during this trip. I think if I had not been wearing that pack, I may have been able to stop the bike from dumping.

I considered leaving my clothes behind in Chilliwack, but that would be an awful sight.

While we were on board the Midway, this little boat arrived....a brand new (to be commisioned this coming weekend) amphibious class ship that can flood in the back and load LCAC's (landing craft air cushion....aka a BIG ASS hovercraft)

The flight crew quickly accepted Randy as one of their own.

I edited and updated thread #58 here since I was having difficulties at the Santa Paula KOA. They restrict bandwidth usage to discourage people from coming up there to surf porn and such. So could not get any posted until I got to Derstuka's place. I will play catch up tomorrow, but I think Long and Stuke have posted about the same pix that I have.

    More to come,

    So. Where was I.

Now it is off to Santa Paula, which is just east of Ventura. Booked in again at the KOA there. It would appear they are in the process of expanding as there was some construction going on, and the tent site they had me booked at was very primitive indeed. Something like the side of a dirt road. No power, no water, in my opinion anyways. It was about 100 yards away. And the washrooms! You had to climb some big jesus hill with ropes to get to it. So I asked to be moved.

They booked me into a full service site. Going to be interesting to see how much that cost me. But it was a nice site. Three times I went to shower and there was no hot water. And they only give you one hour of free internet WiFi. So I paid and extra amount to have unlimited for a week. All was good until I started trying to load photos onto this site. They have restrictions so soon as I was to post one photo, their site would shut me down for the purpose of uploading pix for a day. Next day same thing. Only on photo. I gave up. This was in place to discourage people from using their site for porn. I had a welcoming party to greet me as I arrived on site:

33 Santa Paula KOA Reception Host.jpg

This welcoming member, seemed really interested in my bike. I thought the poor bike was going to get raped. Apparently peacocks are attracted to shiney things. A camping neighbour I had there told me some guy rolled in with a brand new BMW. One of the peacocks went after the bike wile he was gone that the bird was covered with blood, and the bike looked like it went through a bad hail storm. So I watched this bird quite closely during my stay. I would be plucking, dressing and roasting that baby up for dinner if it went after my bike.

34 Santa Paula KOA Host checking out Bike.jpg

Seems I got the sign of approval.

35 Santa Paula KOA Host Sign of Approval.jpg

But this particular bird, one of probably a dozen, seemed to take up residency at the sight right next to mine. This is one very noisy bird. Starts whailing at about 0500. All day during the day till night time. Then every time a car goes by, or someone speaks very loud, or a horn goes off, away this damned bird goes again. My next door camping neighbour thought it was quite funny to yell out, after quiet time, and get that damned bird going again. My date of departure, I was up at 0600 and started packing. (Wake up call at 0500 thanks to Mr Peacock). Well when that bird started its routine, I could hear that same neighbour cursing and swearing, while trying to sleep after a late night. Oh, I was just so sympathetic towards that fool. But I do hate peacocks now.

This is the Train Station in Santa Paula. Not sure if it is still used or not but I kinda like old tran stations.

    36 Santa Paula Train Stn.jpg

Went out for a ride second day there, once I was sure my site was safe from that gawdily dressed bird. Just a scenery shot on Hwy 150, between Santa Paula and the Thomas Aquinas Colledge. Nice riding road with lots of twisties and very little traffic. I took it easy though.

    37 Hwy 33 (1).jpg

Down town Ojia. Quaint town. Should have spent more time there. I think this is the Post Office building.

    38 Some Town Hwy 33.jpg

From Ojia, I turned north onto Hwy33. What a great ride that was. Mostly twisties and hardly any traffic. This tunnel is just before San Pedro National Forrest.

    39 Hwy 3 Tunnel.jpg

Have no idea where I was now.

    40 Hwy 33 OK now I, lost.jpg

Entrance to the Forrest. But still don't know where the hell I am. GPS is such a wonderful device.

41 Los Padres National Forrest (1).jpg

42 Las Padres National Forest (2).jpg

What I liked about this shot is it showes how nature can recover without us interfering. These trees in the background were burned, so I suppose there was a bush fire in the not too distant past. Lots of other signs to indicate this as well. You can see where new plant growth is well on it's way

Sunday morning I am up and ready to head out. Next stop, a visit with Long and his family, then off to Derstuka's place late afternoon. Stay tuned
