I was talking with a buddy who has a "newer" Yamaha 600. He was bragging that his bike was so quick, he could hit 60mph in 1st gear. Quite frankly I think he's full of crap. If I tried that on my vf700f, my engine would have to spin 20k - 25K +RPM. Could someone here tell me if that's possible, before I call him on it.

Modern 600s are amazing. Just watch supersport racing for an idea. They aren't that much slower than the thous these days.

    My brother's old 2005 GSX-R 750 would do 99mph in 2nd gear.

absolutely...did 62 on a friend's 07 R6 in first gear and it may have even had a little more. It certainly sounded like the valves were going to all hit me in the face, but it did it...

Boy am I glad I did not fire back then!!! He would have never let it go. I've never rode a 600. I figured he was exaggerating, just like when he was claiming he had the fastest bike when we went riding, and making comments we would not be able to keep up. As soon as the roads were no longer straight, I had to keep pulling over to let him catch up.

Are the new 1000's the same way, or are they lower rpm power houses?

Yea I know, this is the wrong forum and or site.... But

Modern thous are insane. Just be grateful we can still purchase these machines. I think if the health and safety types really knew what modern bikes are capable of they would ban them immediately.

It's funny that you asked that I just drove a 2007 R6 on Saturday OMG it is quick redline is 14000 and hits it no problem. But it rides like a rock and after 30mins on it my shoulders were sore. I love my interceptor.....it might not be the quickest but its comfortable.

I'm on my third GSXR1000. It will do 90 (150 km/h) mph in first gear according to all the bike mags. Personally haven't tried it, but I did wind it upto just over 120 mph (190 km/h) in second gear and it wasn't at red line, 2 up. These bikes are pretty insane power and handling wise, which is why I leave my 4th gen. stock. Nothing I can do to it would make it anything close to the power and handling of a litre bike. On the other hand, it is good handling, with sufficient power to do everything you need to on the road. More relaxing to ride also.

You have to remember that your talking aboot a bike with a close ratio transmission that is geared to the moon. Not quick so to speak but fast.

You really should grab a ride on something modern. Maybe not if you really like your VF700 as you might not want it anymore.
I'm fairly certain my friends ZX10R does 100+ in first, though was too concerned with the rapidity in which traffic was approaching me to look at the speedo. That bike is utterly mental.

Um... 'not quick'? Running the 1/4 in the high NINES isn't 'quick'? Hmmm... Mr. Cutter, you sir are truly insane. And they top out around 180mph.

See you this weekend lad.

I just got a CBR600F4 about a month ago. A good rider supposedly can do 0-60 in 3.2 seconds. For the 1k's, in cycle world, they claim 2.9 seconds 0-60. Racers will tell you how much of a difference that is, and on the track, they're absolutely correct, but on the street, I'd rather just save the gas. (It gets about 54 mpg, which is much better than the VF700, which I'd be lucky to get more than 40 MPG) The one thing about the CBR is that the engine is so windy and high revving. The limiter doesn't kick in until more than 15k rpm, and there is literally NO torque at low rpm's. In order to get the same highway acceleration that I get on the VF700F in 5th, I have to drop to 3rd or 4th gear. I still love my VF700F. the handling is nothing compared to the CBR(Dry weight 360lbs, aftermarket suspension), But who cares? It's an extremely cool bike. It's Fun to ride, It gets complements, the seat isn't made of stone, and it sounds like a muscle car. What more could you want?

Yeah, I think my 86 is about as modern as I want to get, it goes way faster than I should go.
Those newer machines would be too much temptation to go stupid fast like the gixxersquid that passed me on the right doing probably 160 when I first got my cb750.
He was lucky I saw him in the mirror otherwise we would have been inkstains on the highway.

seriously r6's suck unless its a track day only bike. dont get me wrong, they are an awesome machine, just not on the street. absolutely nothing happens until you go over 10 grand. and yeah theyre quick, but only around 15000 rpms. riding 2 up on an r6 is hell. and the riding position is horrible unless you are hauling ass. seriously dont be jealous... and by the way, vfrs will do 60 indicated in first...

i know exactly what you mean. my friend has an r1. fast as hell on the highway, but absolutely nothing happens below 60 without some fancy clutch work. first gear goes on till about a 100 so you cant even get it to wheelie without clutch. i seriously couldnt even get it to pogo off the ground at 60 in first gear (still not in its power band yet). while the bike was ungodly fast when pushed hard, it just didnt feel like it in the streets at legal speeds. a modded vfr just feels much faster rowing through the gears, while in a liter bike, the power doesnt hit till over highway speeds.

Lower the gearing and they will still suck the spark plugs out of the heads of a vfr as it blows by. The original question was: "are they that fast" Answer: Yes. There is a good reason why there isn't a VFR800 supersport class.
