before you guys start yes i read that top speed post in the general discussion and the vfr specs on specification page, and it stated that our 5th gens top out at 143, yesterday i was riding on the highway early morning not 1 car in sight and couple mile long straight away and i decided to "floor it" by time i started slowing down my speedo was reading about 148-150, here i thought our 5th gens are governed at 143, so this made me think how fast can this bike really go? how fast have you guys takin your bikes and is there a way to increase that top speed?

Depends if you've gut the can and removed the pair.

I'll offer that your speedo is likely off by about 8%

    a) None of the VFR models is 'governed' with respect to top speed
    b) Every bike will have errors in the readings on the speedo, as things like tire make/model and size can dramatically affect the speedometer reading
    c) Why do you want to increase the top speed of your bike?

These bikes are geared to make the best use of the engine power characteristics while delivering reasonable fuel mileage (in top gear). In many cases the bike will achieve its top speed in 5th gear rather than 6th (I know for a fact that my V65 Sabre was that way). Top speed is a combination of many factors; but mostly peak horsepower (varies with the state of tune, fuel used, etc.), gearing (allowing the engine to pull to its peak), and aerodynamic drag (FAR more important than any other single factor).

My personal 2nd Gen VFR has been clocked at warp factor 8.773.

    Hahahahahaha!

I have seen 155 on the uncorrected speedo. I would think flat out the top speed is around 150. The bike only makes about 100hp. (Unless you supercharge it *cough* toecutter *cough*)

FoothillRyder's point about topping out in 5th gear vs. 6th is why I went -1 on the front sprocket. I am not real interested in doing 150 on the street, but I do like getting up to speed quicker.

Max seen on my speedo front straight at our Eastern Creek track was 242kph ( 151mph ) my Zumo indicated at a steady indicated 240 kph the true speed was only 227kph ( 142mph ). An authentic 150mph might be possible on mine but would take a very long bit of straight road to wind it up there.

Riders who care about top speed ride Hyabustas, you know.

Every VFR is capable of a top speed that can get you arrested, thrown in jail, have the bike confiscated, need a lawyer, lose your license, get seriously killed or worse, so why go any faster ??

    It's ALL ILLEGAL !!

You need a fast top speed for Track days so you can re-pass that smug grey bearded old git on his dirty yellow BMW R1100GS on the straight and providing him entertainment in rounding everyone back up each lap.
( as happened during the new 'Blade launch I did in '04. )

I must agree with Squirrelman, in the UK anything anywhere above 70mph is illegal, and being a London copper I simply can't tolerate anyone breaking the law!! That said my old 750 FL went up to 150 on the clock, and today on my way to work, my rescued 750FN hit 120 but please don't tell the rozzers!

At mach 1 on my bike I can't hear Oprah, my cellphone, my GPS that has a Homer Simpson voice, some Godawful one hit wonder rapper that somehow got on the air and other stuff that just ain't there when exceeding the speed of sound.

BB you really have a clinically disturbing and unnatural fascination with Oprah, have you seen a brain care specialist about it ?

Anything over 100 mph and I would rather be in the air (flying)

The trees get smaller and a lot less threatening. Plus there's the whole "big sky theory" versus jackasses on cell phones (myself included)
