    Thanks!
But it was my own stupidity that got me there, & I learned from it!
Yep, That would have seriously hurt, & I Hope you have retired that helmet!?

Anyone who hasnt been "down" will ride in tee shirts and Brain buckets.

Once you've been down once its full face helmets, padded/armour and high laced boots.

Good judgement is often a result of bad judgement and the resulting experience.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but thought I would just tell this little story to show that there are different sides to ATGATT. Whilst I am not the most conscientious person when it comes to gear, I hardly ever ride without shoes. Except last week when I went to visit my brother who lives just down the road in slops/flip flops. Anyway, his dog bit me on the foot!! So I have been limping around for the past 10 days to remind me to NEVER, EVER, ride without shoes.

    From the DOT link:
"Remember a DOT sticker on the back of the helmet and proper inside labeling do not necessarily indicate that a helmet meets all DOT requirements. Many helmets have counterfeit DOT stickers and a limited few also have manufacturer’s labeling. But the design and weight of a helmet, thickness of the inner liner, and the quality of the chin strap and rivets are extra clues to help distinguish safe helmets from non-complying ones."

I'm waiting for the knock off helmet makers to start doing something like this knock off hard drive. Just throw in few extra ounces and viola, your helmet now has the weight of a real one!

The best testing standards right now are ECE 22.05 and Snell 2010. Some argue that Snell is too hard. In the current era, I like the ECE standards.

Here is what I pulled from WebBikeWorld.

Lookup DOT helmet failure rates and most brands fail at a rate of over 70%. ECE 22.05 is a much better testing standard.

I personally use shoes, jeans, t-shirt with a sweater, jacket, or long sleeve over it, and full face. Im shopping around for an armored jacket right now. I know its not the best of practices and its on my mind when I ride..But I only ride about ten miles to work - then back home and I would say im a pretty conservative rider. The fastest Ive been is 85 for a short distance just to let her loose sometimes. Other than that Im just cruising to and from work. I know a lot of you guys would say just wait until something happens and I will be sorry and I totally agree. I keep myself in check and watch tons of motorcycle fail videos on youtube haha. But damn I always see people riding around here - cruisers and sport bikes - and they are wearing shorts and tees...a lot of guys dont wear helmets at all...some dudes just ride with bucket helmets. Just a few dudes I see wearing full gear. One thing I always do is wear my backpack - cause I never go anywhere without it and after riding yesterday without it i felt so naked and exposed. I would think that would add a fraction more of protection. What a ramble this is turning out to be lol sorry.

It's not so much how YOU ride, it's all of the other things on the road that usually sneak up on you. Wet/Slippery corner, inattentive drivers, animals crossing the road, debris on the road, etc. A few weeks ago a huge piece of someones front bumper was flying across the road and right into my lane. I was able to swerve just enough to have it pass on my right side where just a corner of it hit me in the shin. That day I was wearing my Bohn Armor Adventure pants under my jeans and the shin guard took the brunt of the impact! It still hurt but I'm sure not as bad if I wasn't wearing armor. At least you're wearing long sleeves, pants and FF helmet, better than the tank top, shorts, flip-flops and beanie helmet riders I've seen here in So Cal beach areas. Ride safe my friend and Aloha!

Youre totally right...Its everything else on the road. I guess ive been fortunate enough to have never come across a bad situation. I will definitely be getting an armored jacket for now and well see about leg protection. Im not big on the pants - but for safety reasons ill look into options.

Ultimately, I don't care what other people wear. Its not my ass. Hell, I got a friend that's in one of those city bike clubs where all they wear are t-shirts, leather vests with their colors, and brain buckets. But I still ride with him. So take my comments with a grain of salt.

If the only protection you wear is a helmet, you better only crash on your head.
Put your shorts or jeans on, run as fast as you can, and slide across the road. Mix it up the second try by diving. Let us know if it hurts.
Jeans are about as tough as toilet paper when it comes to sliding on the road.

I know you are lucky enough to be in beautiful Hawaii where the temps are hot, the breeze is cool, and the women are beautiful. But as the old saying goes, I would rather sweat that bleed. There is plenty of hot weather gear to look at, if you choose.

Pils, I love it.... Couldn't have said it better - especially the part about jeans being about as tough as toilet paper.

Road Rash really sucks! :boom: I have ended up with it from crashing a bicycle, and have been fortunate  that I have not had significant moving pavement contact from an incident with the motorcycle. (knock on wood)
ATGATT won't save you from serious injury or death when you make contact at high speed with a fixed object (including curbs) or another vehicle, but it can save your life and/or skin at those lower impact crashes, where the main contact is with the road surface (aka skin grinder).

I know, my helmet saved me from having my head split open when my head hit the ground (hard) in a fairly slow speed crash. My jacket and pants eliminated the road rash. My "only" injuries were a concussion (with amnesia :dizzy: ) and bruises - no blood at all. Bike (my KZ) was rideable, but with broken turn signals, etc. I rode from the scene of the crash - but I don't really remember doing it. :faint2:
ER doc was pretty clear that the impact without the helmet would have killed me. Retired that helmet, and bought another just like it. (will need to replace it soon - getting a little old now)

When I laid my bike down last July, I was NOT wearing my jacket.

Never again. Even though my crash was relatively minor (25mph lowside), the road rash was 1st and 2nd degree. My jeans held up surprisingly well, but the tee shirt - IT DOES NOTHING!

I'd rather sweat gallons than have road rash again.
