If the radiator cap is working, it should pressurize the cooling system to about 15psi. At that pressure the water will boil at around 250*F.

I did the VTR fan mod, which helped for around 10 degrees. I use Engine Ice, which Helps too. The PAIR removal was done this winter. I have yet to see much over 220 on this bike and it used to hit 235 regularly. The thing I notice the most is how quickly the temps reduce after I start moving a bit. Riding on the interstated the temp is 170.

Currently running my 5th gen at 116C/240F in stop and go traffic. Problem is ambient temp is just above freezing point (4C). Fan seems to start at 104C and changing the coolant (50/50) made no difference. Temp goes down as soon as traffic moves. I wonder if better coolant circulation, independent of the engine speed would help. Has anyone tried a booster pump in the coolant circuit. Something like this: Davies Craig EBP Electric Water Pump - Demon Tweeks

116C is really on the upper end of hot, even for these bikes. At 104C, that's about the right temp for the fan to come on.

What does your temp go down to when moving?

If you've already tried changing coolant, did you burp the system properly when you changed the fluid? No air pockets? Radiator Cap on tightly and properly? System is completely filled?

If all this checks out, I suspect a stuck or failing thermostat.

There really shouldn't be a need for a booster pump, IMO. There are plenty of other (meaning easier) alternatives out there.

Sorry for hijacking this thread. Temp goes down to 80-85C after 3-4 kms of faster (100-120 km/h) moving . I think I did burp it properly. First time on this vfr800 but did it couple of time on the vf1000f. I will check it again to be sure. I'd like to check the thermostat but it is so deep.

If you guys think the VFR runs hot, try riding a Gen 1 Hayabusa in traffic, in the middle of summer!

I flushed my coolant this weekend and replaced it with distilled water and water wetter.
I would say the cruising temps dropped about 10 degrees, and it seems to cool quicker once I get moving.

    Hey AKT4,

I have an 07. I also live in Phx. I have replaced the fan with the vtr mod and I use water wetter and water. I have put an override on the fan so I can turn it on when hitting bad traffic (at 200F). It is RARE that my bike reaches 220 F now.

To close this hijack, my coolant bottle was empty. Was too lazy to check but since it no longer started I had to change the spark plugs. I then found out. Bad purge I guess. I'll see it if run cooler. Unfortunately I ride below 0C so water is not an option for me.

You could consider Engine Ice. Most will say it keeps temps down, but some say it doesn't. Might want to check it out. I think its good to -20*F. Do you ride when its that cold??? :)

Can someone explain how the PAIR delete lowers the running temperature?

I read the advertisement on a commerical override switch. They say the factory designs the bikes to run hotter to reduce emissions and make the government happy. They agree that hotter means less life and power. I would prefer cooler just as a matter of personal preference.

After owning the bike three days and reading lots of posts here, I am inclined to change the coolant, add an override switch (unless someone knows of a lower temperature thermo switch I could install), add a fan to the right radiator and possibly (probably) delete the PAIR. I don't know if going to synthetic oil will help, but I will probably do that soon. Is there a larger oil cooler out there that someone has tried?

    Objections?
