    VFR Noob.
    2006 VFR800 non ABS.

    Looking forward to learning all about my newest ride from all you experienced VFR pros.

    Still working on getting the clutch adjusted for me.

    So far, I've only done the fender eliminator and bar ends. I do have some frame sliders, ready to install, as well.

    Looks like a couple of bikes exploded in your back yard.

    The VFR is a great bike. The issues are:

    1) The R/R tends to die on these bikes. Even if you buy a new Honda R/R it will die eventually.
    2) The Vtec on your 2006 model incurs some extra costs/hassle when it comes time for a valve check and/or adjustment.
    3) There is no #3, it's a pretty solid bike.

    I rented a 2008 VFR when I was working out in California. It prompted me to get back into riding after being away for 12 years.

    Just one... the KLR

    OK... so here's a noob question... what's R/R
    Yeah, I had the dealer do a lot of service, which included valve check & adjustment, fluids, brakes, and new sprockets and chain, before I would buy it. The mileage was close to the major service interval for the clearance. The rear sprocket was chewed up... there was no way I was going to ride off with it in that condition!

    Yeah, the VTEC took me by surprise, when it got happy! Kinda like a Turbo.
    Unlike most of my vehicle purchases... I didn't know much about the VFRs before I bought it. And that's what has led me here! I really need to get educated on this machine.

    The R/R is the Requlator/Rectifier. It takes the AC voltage from the stator (under the left engine case cover) and Rectifies it to DC voltage. The Regulator attempts to keep that voltage around 14 volts. This charges the battery and supplies power for all the electronics and lights. The R/R is known to go bad. Best to have someone look at the charging system and the connector from the stator to the R/R.

    Have it checked every year or replace the R/R with an aftermarket one.

    The Honda VFR R/R is notoriously bad. Fix this one issue and the bike will serve you well. You will probably wear out before it does.

    the 06 R/R needs to have better cooling, simply (if its not dead yet) removing it from the frame and cleaning the metal pad on the back and on the frame then artic silver thermal paste (from computer shop, use razor blade to add skim coat to back of R/R. the point is to fill the tiny gaps in the metal to metal contact patch, less is more) the r/r and bolt back in place. keep fins clean. keep your battery on a tender if your not riding for a while or your r/r has to work hard to catch up.

    download the FSM from this site, you need the 2002-2006 book, when talking to the forum you have a 6th gen. Most common problem besides the r/r is the tell a tale smile youll have on your face every time you ride.

    your clutch should have a little free play in the handle before you feel it and should be fully disenguaged about 3/4in from the grip. adjust with thumb screw on handle, its a hydraulic clutch.
    get a manometer and sync your starter valves, this helps with the cold engine snappy atitude and smothes the engine response a little.

    most common mods:
    can gut ( gut the mufflers),
    pair valve removal,
    evap removal,
    snorkle delete (found on air box, mostly for sound)
    flapper delete/ always open (air box)
    power commander 3 and o2 sensor bypass, o2 sensors are a standard 3/4 UNC thread, you can take your o2s off and just plug the bungs (2)

    uncommon mods:
    link the second low beam headlight filiment to the high beams, be prepared to be flashed with your lights on low. this helps by showing better definition of when you switch to lows. look for my guide in april 2012
    Cat-delete, this may be illegal in your area
    super charger, yes there is a kit, not its not an exhaust driven turbo

    AWESOME --- So you have mad skills huh ------- going to work last Sunrday I had 8 women pass me all on sport bikes, GSX and R1's--- been seeing more and more of this out here in SoCal. Love it, just hope they don't tailgate like most women do in cagers, especially to motorcycles.

    I'm trading in the Viffer on something shiney very soon and will be off on new adventures. Just couldn't imagine not saying thanks! Ya'll made me feel welcome and provided lots of support. I appreciate all the info, help, advise, and all sorts of crazy posts here.
