So I've had my VFR for 10 days and 1300 miles now and I've recently noticed a strange noise, but only when it's top gear. It only appears when it's on the gas; on a constant or closed throttle it's inaudible. It kinda sounds a bit like keys rattling.

It's NOT the bike's keys as there's only one on the ring. The chain is perfectly adjusted and there are no loose panels. Could it be the flapper valve thing?

The bike's done 41,000 miles and came with a comprehensive Honda service history. It's wearing its standard exhaust.

Any ideas as to the culprit would be great appreciated - I love this bike :frown:

very hard to diagnose on the net. I think someone made a recording of the flapper thing you mentioned that might help you if you can listen and compare but I'm not even sure how the best way to try and search for the message would be. You'll get a thousand results for flapper mod or whatever and only one of them will actually play the noise. Anyone else remember who that was or the recording?

I tried to make a recording. I put the bike on it's main stand and got it into 6th but the noise didn't manifest itself - must only happen under actual load.

hmm... After rereading your post it really doesn't read like it's the flapper valve, but again it's very difficult to diagnose without actually hearing it. Hell, I probably couldn't diagnose it if I did hear it! I know a few guys on here that can tell what generation of a VFR is by the engine noise, though and they might be able to pick it up from a sound clip. Do you happen to have a herocam or something like that? I know that my little hero cam mounted on my tank will pick up the engine noise even with the mic on the lowest setting. It's possible you could "show" us the sound that way.
