i put on my seat cowl today after i got my bike back from the dealership. the screws that it came with were like 6" long each and took forever to screw in "thats what she said". after i finished putting it on, my friend mentioned to me if i get pulled over and i have to give the cop my registration/proof of insurance i would have to take off my cowl to get under the seat. now all my tools are under the seat i used a tool from my house to screw them in and i don't carry it on me, so what is the cop going to do? unless he has a allen wrench with him that screw is not coming off and i can't hand him my info. ima prob go sometime next week to buy smaller screws but til then that cop is going to have to follow me home n wait til i remove the cowl to show him my papers lol

More than likely he's not gonna wait for you to dick around with it- you'll just get cited for lack of insurance & registration, and he'll tell ya to figure it out in court...

Get those little do-dads that all you have to do is push the center in and it slides in just like a bolt--- saw this on a VFR at the Rock Store last summer. JTH

I have to agree with this, LEO don't wanna hear no bs, just keep your papers in an easily accessable area, like you're wallet (is where mine are). Last time I got pulled over LEO had me dead to rights, handed him all my paperwork and he gave me a written warning. Seriously doubt he woulda been that nice if I dicked him around with some "hey, you don't have the tools, than fuck you" bullshit. Just sayin, your ticket not mine. I find that testing the LEO's patience does not play in your best interest.

Don't forget that the LEO has all the time in the world, if you're headed to work or some appointment, you don't. Worse comes to worse and you really pi$$ him off, he can just call the tow truck and you can deal with that too.

No need to be servile, but there's no sense in needlessly pi$$ing him off. Being reasonable can make the difference between ticket and no ticket. JMO of course.

I believe sporttour.com has the push pin replacements for the stock screws. I have em, they're great. You have to drill the threads out of the original holes, but not like I was ever going to want to put the original screws back in.

Sounds like a lot of very good points of view here. Exceept the original post. Let me go over this. You put the papers under the seat...sounds reasonable. You put the seat cowl on. Yup. Nice call there too. I like the looks of the cowl on the seat. Good that it is secured so you don't loose it flying off the back. Everythoing checks out good here so far. Now it goes to pot. You get checked and Mr LEO asks for registration papers. Prove to him this bike is yours, you are adequately insured to protect not only yourself, but me too. You deliberately made your paper work inaccessable.

Me as former Mr LEO would likely say word to the effect, produce them now, here, at roadside, or I provide you with my paperwork. And I will provide you bike with a ride off the road via some junky tow truck whose driver would be far less experienced in towing a bike than say a car. See where this is going. ANd what's more, you would have been paying my wages to do this.

Come on Hzaza. You know this is wrong so fix it. You, in a long shot may win the court battle if you dipute the ticket through some freak in the evidence, but hey, you have probably brought that LEO into court on his day off. You bugger. I used to hate that. The double time overtime, minimum 4 hours call back for day off overtime for 10 minutes of court testimoney just gave me enough money to clutter my garage with useless jusnk like a VFR. Hated that....just hated it I tell you.

You are not a dick...but just so you understand, I would not expect a whole lot of compassion in such a matter when there was something fairly obvious you could have done to avoid this. I cannot remember how may people told me "they left their Driver's Licence at home which is just a couple blocks away. Can you follow me there so I can produce it to you?" Um, lets see now. NO.

My 6th gen has the papers under the seat. Seat is held on with the same key used to operate the bike. SO if I can drive it, I can access the papers. Look around the bike. You should be able to find a hidden spot where you can put your papers in a waterproof sandwich bag and duct-tape it out of sight and easy access.

BTW. If you needed your tools for an emergency roadside repair, then what?

I don't know exactly what your bike is like or how thick the panels are, but would these work?

    --BOLT Motorcycle Hardware--

I have been replacing those stupid and rediculously expensive Honda Panel Clips with these and they work great for that purpose. Actually better than the OEM clips.

Try one of your panel clips. If the OEM panel clips work, then so will these. ANd at 5 bucks for 10 of them. well you can't go wrong. I don't think Home Depot would have something like this. Maybe Nappa Autoparts, or one of your bigger Auto Supply Shops, may have something. But the design on this particular product is very good.

Mthinks the OP has shit for brains hassling any LEO because he doesn't carry tools to remove a seat cowl.

The MIA bolts are Frankenbolts. Not real easy to lose for anyone with a room temp IQ. ..and dear readers, they can be both screwed and unscrewed using a coin. Or you can just let the cop screw you.. LOL

BB is right on the money here. For removing my '98 seat cowl I carry a large washer that
unscrews the fasteners quite easy. If I'm on a long trip with the back seat loaded
with gear I carry my papers in my jacket. Problem solved.
    Carry on ~

Bob I do that too, but all the time, the papers in an inconvenient pocket in the jacket means I wear ATGATT

For those who don't have seat cowls to begin with, or Frankenbolts or the nifty pins as above or just don't give a shit, or are way too cool to ever think about this type thing but do have jackets like poor Randy, that leak, Walmart has some smokin deals on ziplock baggies for that all important paperwork the LEOS seem to always want to see.

I hope this helps even though it smacks of a run on sentence.
