It's taken me over a year, but with y'all and sabmag's help, and a metric crap ton of work I've finally finished the full restoration as of today.

Today I picked up my newly-restored OEM red tank up from the shop I left it at in October. I knew it was a tall order to ask the guy to restore the red without disturbing the original decal, but somehow he managed to do it. I just about cried when I saw it in the shop's office today. Better than I could ever have hoped for.

So #300 rolled into my driveway in April of 2011 like this:

And as of 20 minutes ago, I stood back and admired the finished product:

    Yatta!

I know, right? If that day ever comes I'll probably pick it up, then go stand over there and throw up.

Great job. Had one of those around 87/90 and ended up using it for despatch riding in London for three years 12 hours a day 5 days a week winter and summer - no other choice. Brilliant bike and ultra reliable, did 80,000 miles in that time with no problems at all aside from replacing the clutch due to continuous London stop start. Aside from my 94 VFR the best bike I ever owned

Cheshirecat must be mistaken or the best fettler in the UK cuz nobody 'round 'ere has ever gotten a VF500 to run that long.........

40,000 miles on the original valve springs, then 40,000 more i find hard to believe.

Hey guys! I wasn't getting my notifications for this thread, so I fell behind in replies.

YES I absolutely will make a restoration gallery. I don't know how many pictures I have all-in-all, but I'll get them all together pretty soon. :)

When I first saw the pictures I was wondering if you found a new OEM tank and bodywork. Your painter did a great job on that tank. How about the bodywork? Overall, it looks fantastic. I've done a few of these myself and the pure sense of satisfaction and accomplishment makes it all worth it. Awesome job.
