I bought an '87 700F2 and I'm cleaning it up. I'm new to working on bikes but I am mechanically inclined (and, so far, I've found an answer to every question I've had in the forums here).

Attached are a couple of pictures of the exhaust a previous owner installed. I just want to confirm that this is 'mickey mouse' and not standard practice. Also, I would like to know how things should actually be (a nice close-up photo would be great).

It appears the metal between the pipes and the clamps were cut form Coke cans. Should this be welded instead or is it a pressure fit? Or, is there some other way everything should be connected? Thanks for the help!

It does have a single Yoshi on the back.

Owner prob just tried to seal some leaks with aluminum shim.

Post a photo of your Yosh cannister. Looking at the 4:1 plumbing yours has, it could be a Yoshimura Pro Series-2 system.

Yeah, looks a little mickey mouse but you never know what HE had to repair from possibly another PO.
Look at the parts fisch to get an idea of the seals and clamps used for a stock exhaust hookup.

truth be told, its mickey mouse, but only semi-mickey mouse. the exhausts joints from whence you removed all those clamps actually ARE normally sealed with adjustable clamps, in a similar design to the ones you took off, but without a doubt, the ones you removed are NOT the stock clamps that should be on there. it looks like somebody found the clamps from a later model VFR, like a 4th or 5th gen and threw them on there.

Thats a Yoshimura Pro Series-2 Canister (has welded endcap). Came in 2 sizes, 3.5X13" or 4X15". 2 colors, black or silver, and 2 baffle options, Standard or Competition.

Mine is the 4" silver, standard baffle, with the complete system. Prior owner had the collector ceramic coated, but brake fluid took its toll.

Do you know if a change in jetting will be required by slipping on this Yosh 4-into-1 exhaust?

Go to an auto parts store and ask for some band clamps for the diameter of your pipe,. That's all you need there. They are clean looking and you can hid the bolts in behind the pipe. You may have to go a racers supply like Summit. Here's one for different sized pipes. You need for the same size.

Thanks! I bought S3V's Yosh pipe, and it should be here by the end of the week. Just wanted to know if I needed to be buying a Jet Kit now so that I'm not waiting at the end of the week. :)

You should not have to rejet for the Yosh but you might want to shim the main needle is what most people do.

It's my understanding that if I don't have the aftermarket adjustable needles, then it's just a matter of putting a washer under the clip, correct? How thick of a washer are we talking? 1 or 2 mm?

Yep, 1 or 2mm, but wait to ride the bike first with the new setup and find what specific issues you notice that need improvement.

Will do. I think the head gasket is rightly first on the list of things to do though! :p

The stock setup includes thin sleeves made of some obscure fibrous material (let's hope it's not asbestos) between the header pipes and the rear pipes just under the clamps and wouldn't seal proppaly without them.

Are these cans welded onto the piping?

The mufflers look like they may be tricky to replace with slip-ons.

Jason, it may be easier than you think. When I bought my laser 4-2-1 system years ago, I got a muffler and the 4-2-1 baffle, and I think that was considered a slip-on system. It basically replaced the whole exhaust except for the header pipes. Installation wasn't even difficult, outside of the fact that a center stand has to be removed (if you have one) to install the new parts.

Chris, I was referring to this specific Yoshimura exhaust. If you notice, the muffler appears to be welded to the pipe. I read somewhere else that they are actually riveted together. The next issue is that the pipe diameter looks really large, 2.25" or even 2.5". I think most slip-on replacement mufflers are made to fit smaller pipe.

My laser baffle has a 3 inch outlet. I had to have current muffler custom built to fit both the bike and the baffle (though it sounds better than any other bike exhaust I've ever heard).
