I have a 1987 VFR Interceptor that i would like to bring back. My cousin had the bike and the engine overheated and the cylinder head gasket blew. The mechanic the bike was by at first changed the gasket but lost the timing. Can anyone assist me with getting the timin sheet back please. Thanks in advance

Not much of a mechanic if he 'lost the timing'. I'll assume that means he didn't know how to properly time the camshafts.

The first thing you should do is let us know where you are. It's possible there's a savvy member close that would be willing to help in person. We should probably also know your level of wrenching skills. Ever do any serious engine work yourself? If not, cam timing is probably not something you should start with.

An ass with tools he is, not a mechanic.

There are chances that serious damage could have been done to valves or pistons if timing was wrong and would make repairs tougher and more expensive.

Hehe, 'lost the timing'. Methinks he lost more than that.
Odds are there is more damage than just the head gasket if it truly overheated and was run until it locked up.

Well im not by any means a mechanic and i dont fancy being one. lol. I live in Trinidad and Tobago and im located in Tobago and the bike mechanics here are for lack of a better word lame. I thought about shipping in the entire engine but the shipping cost and taxes i would have to pay would be enormous. Thats why i asked if i could repair the engine. Thanks again for your help in advance guys.

Snap a picture of the engine so we have a little better idea of where we are at in this project and I'll see if we can talk you through it.

Best thing you could do is to get a factory service manual. If all you can find is a haynes or clymer try those. Do you have a good set of tools? If not you may be better off finding a good running used engine. Its really hard to talk you through this until you get started and have some questions on how to do something.
But besides the manual i would start by laying out allyour parts and getting organized.

To add to Taylor's comments, if you are not at all mechanically inclined, it will probably be a lot more difficult to "walk you" through this. Based on the pictures, you have a pretty decent size project in front of you if you have no mechanical ability and it looks to be a little more work for "phoning it in". Not trying to rain on your parade, just putting that out there. In any case, Good Luck!
