I'm trying to remove the oil drain bolt from an 83 vf750f. I just bought it and the previous owner said that it has overheating issues. It has very low miles on it. I started slowly with a breaker bar and got it to move slowly. I then went to a socket wrench and it wouldn't budge so I went back to the breaker bar. I got it to keep moving again. I was expecting oil to start coming through but nothing. After about 30 seconds of wrenching to try to remove it, it doesn't seem to be moving further out. It turns and I get to do a 360 with the 17 mm socket wrench but no progress in moving further out of the oil pan. I tried to reverse and tighten it up but it won't go that way either. I hit it with a hammer from underneath and from the side but still nothing a no oil leaking out. Has anyone had this happen to them.

Sounds a bit stripped out up near the head of the bolt/plug. You could try to heat the pan around the bolt and see if that will ease removal of the plug, but I wouldn't bet on it. You also may be able to jam a small flathead inbetween the pan surface and the plug surface to try to get "good" threads to catch and allow you to back out the plug. Either way, I wouldn't plan on putting that drain plug back in, get a new one first, and be ready for the possibility of repairing the pan threads also.

thank for your reponse. Does it sound like something that should be helicoiled or just tapped and a new plug put in. I also found a plug on Amazon which says M17 but the widith is 14mm. Does that sound like the plug.

    Amazon.com: 5 Acura & Honda Oil Drain Plugs M14-1.4 17mm Hex: Automotive

it also says the pitch is 1.4 and I think the same pitch should be used.

14mm is the thread diameter, 1.4mm is the threads per millimeter, the 17mm is the size of the hex that you put your wrench/socket on. You should absolutley only use the original thread size if the hole can be salvaged. Wether or not you can save the threads I cannot tell you from here, best bet is to get the plug out and run a tap through it, if you can get the threads back in shape and re-torque the new drain bolt to proper specs than you're golden. If the threads are too far gone you may need to do a helicoil/timesert/other meathod of thread repair.
