hey guys just picked up my vfr from the dealership today, and i was riding it back home when the FI light came on when i go on the highway, they bike didn't have any problems what so ever and was riding perfectly fine all the way which is a 18mile trip. i switched through all gears and took it up to 110 not 1 problem perfect throttle response, shifting etc. the light just came right on didn't flash or anything just came on and stayed on, the bike is a 99 with 28000 miles on it, have any of u guys experienced this before and any idea what it could be? i called the dealership and they told me to bring it in whenever and they'll look at it seeing how i'm under a 30 day warranty. just want to know if its safe to ride it that far.

There are literally dozens of codes that are tied into the FI light coming on. When you are riding, and there's an issue, it will stay continuously lit. Many of the codes have absolutely no affect on how the bike performs in a given situation, others can be serious. I had an issue for 6 months that never turned into a problem.

I will say this: My bike (a 2000) was throwing a couple different FI codes. First it was this, then it was that. Blah blah blah. Turns out to be a problem with the regulator rectifier. If your not familiar with VFR's, I would strongly suggest you search this forum for "R/R" threads, or stator threads, or melted wire threads, etc.

While I can get into all sorts of explanations and tell you what to do and how to pull the codes (its actually pretty easy), you mentioned you bought it from a dealer with a 30 day warranty. Bring that bike back NOW and tell them to fix that shit pronto.

Have them check the charging system. Tell them to give you a printout of your charging system - it should be about 12.8 to 13.2 at idle. From 2000rpm to 5000rpm and above, you should be around 14.7 or so. If you're not at these numbers, you could potentially have either R/R or Stator issues. And again, I had FI codes indicating a problem, but it was all tied into the R/R.

You could also ask them how many blinks it was giving, and that will tell us the code.

I would try to find a dealer a little closer to where you live. Most dealers in Houston are great except the HD dealership there.

Just havin a little fun with ya! ;) Good luck on the fix. Pliskin is spot on. Get that bike in ASAP and make sure you have that warrantee in print, in hand and a full understanding of the nannoprint. Dealers are slick operators and hopefully this warrantee will not run it's thirty days on the very day they tell you your bike is fixed. If it is the dreaded R/R do not let them talk you into replacing it with an OEM swap. Lots of poop on this in the archives since it has been an ongoing problem for more than 20 years and Honda is never going to own up about it.

LMAO BB. Methinks the Houston dealership comment "rocketed" over his head.

Five minutes in the old HD dealership or one minute in the current HD dealershop would put him in orbit.

I worked for the bunch that owns the extant HD dealership whilst in grad school. The Namesake is probably seeing how many residents of the netherworld are interested in making a deal with the devil..

if the map sensor goes funky then your ride will be affected as it tells the computer how much load your engine is under and is also part of the system that adjusts your fuel conditions. FI light meaning map sensor = bad ride, horrible fuel milage and worse throttle response. I think it will be more indepth. I hope they are right, but the symptom and response just doesnt add up. Keep us posted and if that thing even hickups get it back to the dealer while under warranty.

Hzaza - I'll say this for what its worth: My bike displayed the code for the MAP sensor as well. (And its an expensive little part, too). But, once again, when my R/R was replaced, no more code for the MAP sensor. There was nothing wrong with it.

Maybe it truly is your MAP sensor, and since its covered under warranty, good for you. But I still say have them check the R/R and the charging system.

I'm not harping on this to be a dick - but its really ironic with how your bike is displaying the exact symptoms mine did.

Bring her back to the stealership and do not take her back untill the R/R replace.

Prolly a good idea either way. With the age and the mileage, a hundred bucks will save you more in the end. Not to mention avoiding breaking down in the middle of nowhere on a day when all shops are closed and you don't have moto towing insurance...
