Hey so it starts like this...I never noticed any coolant leak the first week I had the bike, but when I took the fairing off to change the oil I noticed the reservoir was empty and there was some coolant on the alternator cover. So i know there was a leak for a while. I drained the remaining coolant and refilled it. This morning I noticed a puddle, about 2-3 inches, under the area where the 2 lower fairings meet. It was dripping off the alternator cover, onto the inner side of the left fairing, and flowing down to the front. What I want to know is if there are radiator hoses that run from left to right of the bike, right above the alternator cover? If not what could it be. Im lucky I decided to do this oil change yesterday and notice the dry coolant reservoir. It seems like When the reservoir is empty the leak is very minimal - I dont know if that says anything. But since I put new coolant and made sure there is coolant in the reservoir as well, I found a small puddle today. Its definitely not from the left radiator, water pump, or any of the lower radiator hoses. I guess I could pull the right fairing and inspect things there too - but yesterday when it was off I didnt notice anything.

It is common to have to tighten the hose clamps given your bikes age, no insult meant. Best to locate with no doubt the leak, putting an eye ball on it, but my guess it is just a simple fix. Good luck.

Which hose? Cause like I said its dripping from the middle of the bike onto the alternator cover...All first I thought it was something leaking out of the alternator!! But I was wrong, it was just dripping from the top of the cover down past the gasket and bolts of the alternator cover.

Tighten them all, michaels. Every hose clamp you can see. You'd be surprised at how loose they can get. I had a similar issue a couple years ago - but my puddle was only about an inch. Tightened everything up, and no more leaks. Always start easy! :)

yep - every hose clamp on my '98 with 18k miles had to be tightened. There are a couple under the throttle body assembly too. I used a special ratchet to reach them without removing the throttle bodies - but I also had my frame removed so I'm not sure if it will work for you.

Harbor Freight $30 - special care not to over tighten and damage the clamp with this much leverage

Those under the throttle body sound like they could be it!! I knew it was something that was hard to get to...of course it is right? Why would anything be easy?! lol. But I will go through and give the rest a little twist. Thanks a lot guys.

On a side note...Im also letting the bike site overnight without the left fairing on so it doesnt run down the fairing before it hit the ground - just to see what the puddle is really looking like. I turned the bike on today and let it idle to about 150 degrees just so i could let it sit and come back to it to see where its leaking but ive yet to find any leakage this time. Maybe in the morning ill find something lol.
