What are the benefits of gutting the catalytic converter ie. power, sound,etc?... I have a 2001 VFR800 and am considering this modification. If done is this mod best accompanied by a Powercommander and O2 sensor bypass?

Gutted the cat on my 04 vfr. With Power Commander and O2 bypasses I got a fairly signifigant power increase. Currently running the map for staintunes with restrictors as I thought that would be close to what was needed after cat cleanout. Probalbly should take it to a dyno center for a custom map. Any way would reccommend the mod. The sound was improved some and is getting better all the time. Will also add that it was quite a job to get all that stuff out of the converter housing it is very hard material.

    Morning .
I assume the Cat Is the bulbous item located in front of the rear wheel ? Or is it located under the fairing ?

We do not have bylaws on Catalytic Converters , and Im told they restrict anythings power to a moderate degree , so if it can go out - it must get out.

You are correct on 6th gen it is the funny looking thing just in front of the rear wheel.

I would think you could just open the pipe up and punch out the insides and put it back together, my question is if you do that does it bother anything else the the o2 sensors etc, or do ya just turn the key and ride

On gen 6 vfrs the o2 sensors are in front of the catalytic converter, however cleaning out the converter probably changes the air/fuel ratio if you read it at the tail pipe. So I don't know what message the o2 sensors would then send to the ecu. One could just bypass the sensors with the resistors talked about on another thread . For my part I think it best to also go with the Power Commander and sensor bypasses when cleaning the cat or any exhaust mod for that matter.

I gutted my cat last year. The benefits...

Hmm...well for one, she eats a lot less, sh*ts a lot less, and runs out of the room every time she sees me now...
