In lieu of purchasing soft bags here's a possible tail trunk alternative that should not cost a arm and a leg.

Viewing Images For Emgo Portable Travel Trunk :: MotorcycleGear.com

Seems like a pretty nice piece of gear for just $71

Note that the Emgo trunk comes with a mounting base suitable for mounting to most luggage racks. However the problem could be finding a relatively low-cost rack that will fit a 5th generation Viffer and which might be fairly easy to remove and install, or that won't be hideous if left on the bike when the trunk isn't needed.

I have a friend who has one of these tail trunks mounted to his Suzuki Wee-Strom's standard luggage rack and it seems to be a reasonably well-constructed piece of gear for the $$. I've purchased and used black soft bags made of cordura nylon in the past and one thing I quickly learned was that these fabrics are subject to fading within a short period of time when exposed to the sun's uv radiation. I purchased a fairly expensive set of Chase Harper bags about 20 years ago and within a month or two they faded considerably. When I contacted the company about this I quickly discovered their "lifetime warranty" did not cover fading...even when the bags were only a few months' old. Since then whenever I use my tank or tail bags I generally keep the rain covers in place to shield the cordura nylon bags from the sun's rays.

I constructed a 'thing' that keeps the bags off the pipes.

I have exactly the same bags as Randy. My bags rubbed a hickey on the sides. I put this thing on and they don't move. Even at extended 100+ speeds.

The heat sheilds dont get ot wough for many baga. Mine re the rapid trasit rexon baga. They are fine and ride fine. The foam backed bags will have an issue. Or "could" have an issue.

FYI - This was one of the sets I ordered and sent back. My recollection is they were really small. I usually like to carry a change of socks, gloves, raingear (light weight) helmet visor, sunglasses, bottle of water, tire repair kit, bungee net, and of course the covers for the bags to keep them dry (you can see most of my stuff is used in the event I get wet). That would be typical stuff that I carry on a daily basis. Add in if I pick up my lunch on the way to work, or throw the newspaper in there to read later, and it adds up quick.

So now if I want add in any stuff for an overnight, or a heavy sweatshirt, it started getting tight. Maybe because I'm a 6' 2", 240# fat bastard so my clothes are bigger, but it was still a tight fit.

The CL 900 work much better for me. Picked up the heat shield for the extra $25. Good to go. Holds plenty, looks decent, and stay put at speed.

But that's just my style to have a little more room.

    P-38 Saddlepacks

I used the Eclipse P-38s for years and they were perfect for me, however, they will not work with a "high mount" Staintune.
