Congrats on getting a VFR. I too knew nothing about them when I bought mine so its even more of a pleasant surprise to experience what great bikes they are. The guys on this site are really helpful too.

There are ways to lower these bikes. Just type in "lower the bike" in the Advanced Search box
in the upper right hand corner of this page.

Congrats on the bike. They sure are a lot of fun to ride. Didn't mean to sound negative and all in my last post. But yu asked for an opinion and that's just how I am when looking at buying a new bike. I like it to be just the way it was when it came from the factory. I'm sure this guy took really good care of it and you will get a lot of trouble free miles out of it. The only one bad thing honda did on it was the regulator\rectifier and the wiring around it. Just make sure that is taken care of and you will be good to go. Again sorry if I came across negative to you about your new bike.

Hey Taylor, I didnt take it the wrong way dont worry about it - No need to apologize.

I will look into the regulator/rectifier, although i asked the guy about it and he said he didnt really know about that flaw on these bikes - but to me it sounds like the original owner took care of it cause the 2nd owner I bought it from said there have been no melted wires or anything wrong with the charging system since he had it in his possession. Thats just what I asked him cause after some suggestions on here I did some reading and thats what happens right? The wires that connect to the r/r cant handle the load so they need to be upgraded to bigger wires otherwise they burn up causing the connection to melt and frying the r/r?? Correct me if im terribly mistaken lol. Ill definitely look into it cause it looks like those things cost a couple hundred bucks for the r/r and the new harness when I did a quick search.

Looks like there is a slight chance it may be going back to him anyway!!! I know, total bummer, but not guaranteed. The thing is that he brought it over from Washington state in one of his friends containers....His friend is building a house over here in Hawaii and frequently brings containers with supplies in it.....So there is no actual "reciept of landing", and thats one of the things required to register an out of state vehicle (in Hawaii). Like i said before if it doesnt work out he told me I dont have to worry and I can just bring the bike back and get my $$$, but in the meantime hes going to try and get an official - non-official (lol) receipt made out from his friends contracting company stating it was shipped on his container. Im pretty sure that will work out. If not, I got to cruise an awesome bike around for a bit! Although I would really prefer to keep it cause like you all said, its killer!

Hey, another quick question...Whats the typical cold starting behavior for this 98-99 model? Ive noticed it does need a few minutes of choke at about 2k rpm's to be able to pull out without it dying. Or it will pull out but maybe die after pulling the clutch in again while stopping at the end of the driveway. Cranks right up every time really easy but it definitely needs that 2k choke for a few minutes. I had a 1998 Ninja 500ex last year and it was the same deal, and I was told that it was common - so I would assume the same for this bike but I figured since you guys are so awesome I could just ask you and call it a day lol. I did go through this Honda service manual and found out where the engine idle speed screw is, and it says 49 states/canada should be at 1200 and california 1300....Would this help that low cold idle if I adjusted the engine idle speed? Ill take a better note next time I ride - but if i recall correctly, I think its idling closer to 1000 than 1200 when its warmed up.

I always like to let mine warm up for a few minutes or about 150 degrees. And yes you want your idle set t about 1200rpm. All you need to do is pop out the little rubber plug on the frame rail and there will be a screw to adjust. Just do it while its fully warmed up.

I ride a 98 and I 'choke' it to start, then go half for a minute or so. When it starts idling really fast I turn off the 'enrichener" I think is the actual term. I'll be over in Hawaii in wackywacky in May and I remember from the last time I was there no one was wearing helmets. I hope you do not follow that philosophy. If you do, it's your business, but a craniotomy ain't fun.

Im glad to inform you that i do ride with a helmet lol. What I noticed, on my island anyway, that most the street bike riders wear helmets and the guys riding choppers and harleys and what not - do not wear helmets. The law is you just need protective eyewear. But I think its dumb that they only require you to protect your eyes and not your skull. And I think Im doing a idle adjustment today when I get back from the dmv - Although the "enricher" works how it should, I still think my idle on a warmed up engine is a tad bit low so I think it will help the cold starts too and I wont have to choke it as long.
