    Hi guys,

I've been a lurker on here for a good long time. I had an account from about 4 years back that I lost.

Well after about 5 years of dreaming I'm finally getting to the f2/f3 rim conversion on my 86 VFR 750. I've read every thread on every major website that google can find for me and I just wanted to confirm with you guys if I've understood it all properly.

I've got myself a F2 front rim that has had the speedo drive modified and the rotor posts machined 12mm to use on the stock VFR forks. I understand that I should either upgrade the forks at some point or at the very least upgrade the springs but I'm trying to do this in pieces to not make it one big financial burden at all once. Even if later I have to buy a different un-modified f2 front rim.

What do you guys recommend for a front tire? 120/60? Or something else?

I've also got a 5.5" CBR F3 rear rim, at least it measures 5.5" lip to lip. I've been in contact with JamieD about getting the proper spacers. I also understand that I have to potentially move out my countershaft sprocket to kept it inline with the rear drive sprocket if I use a larger rear tire.

Do you think this will be necessary with a 160/60 rear tire? Also what tire sizes do you guys recommend. I'd preferably like the widest tire possible that does not inhibit riding performance. If it's 160/60 so be it.

I also understand that I potentially have to modify the brace to either an S shape or ] from [] and cut 21mm out of the rear caliper bracket. Do I have to modify the brace with a 160/60 or just the larger tires?

Can I use the stock cbr f3 rotor with the vfr caliper and pads? Or do I swap my vfr rotor on? Also do I use the stock CBR F3 sprocket or do I swap my VFR sprocket onto the F3 rim?

Next I have to either get a Fox Twin Clicker or purchase a modified shock from JamieD.

Then I have to dial the bike in by moving the triple tree up or down the forks in 5mm increments to get the right feel and dial in the center shock to my preference.

Finally if I'm going to track the beast I should look at upgrading the forks, getting a fork brace and bracing the rear swing arms.

    Am I missing anything?

My apologies for the essay, this is just one of my first adventures in custom modifications, I've got a wife and 2 kids and I don't want to leave anything to chance.

    Cheers,

    Matt

Is this forum not that active or have I already inadvertently stepped on some toes?

I'm just curious about the tire sizes, which rotor and sproket to use and if I've missed anything so that I don't have to wait for parts to come in mid-process.

Tell you what. I'll sweeten the deal. If you guys help me, I'll post pics of the progress.

    Everyone loves build pics.

I'm thinking of running 120/70 and 170/60. I just hope that size front tire will not interfere with the stock fender. Ive done some more research and Im pretty sure f3 rear rims were 5.0" but mine is definitely 5.5" from lip to lip. Do you measure lip to lip when determining size?

I'm guessing that I'll definitely have to move out my countershaft sprocket. Any suggestions on how to do this properly?

As for the rotor/sprocket I guess I'll figure it out when I get it in the bike. I have a link to the tooth calculator so I might need a new rear sprocket either way.

To anyone else bumbling through this conversion that happens to stumble upon this thread.

I've just recently found this, which has some very useful information about spacer sizes, sprockets and rotors.

the 160/60 tire choice may not require an offset countershaft sprocket but a 170 or 180 will. I run a 120/70-17 on my F2 front wheel without problem and really prefer it over the 120/60. There's no real reason to run the F3 rear rim if you're doing a 160 rear tire the F2 is ideal. You can buy offset countershaft sprockets online. I've seen them somewhere. You can run the vfr rear caliper and pads with the F3 rotor AND caliper bracket no problem there. Brake stay arm must be machined regardless of what tire you go with.

Thank-you for that info! Do you think you'd really notice the difference in size between the 160 and 170 anyway? I'm all for performance but I mean.. you've got to look good right?

I didn't intentionally seek out the F3 rear rim. It was given to me for free.

Coincidentally I have a F3 front rim for sale. :D

I've done the full upgrade to f2 rear with Fox TC shock and everything. I used an f2 caliper but didn't have to modify my brake arm. Instead we tapped the outside of the caliper. I also didn't need to offset and I believe I'm running a 180. I'll look when I get home. When I replace it, I will be going with a 160 though. The 180 was just handy.

You can see most of it here. http://vfrworld.com/forums/1st-2nd-generation-1983-1989/25979-supertex-build.html

Really, an F2 rear wheel with a 180 tire? Not good.

I would have agreed with you, but it was what we had. I gotta tell ya absolutely no worries. Drops in great, handles well at high speed, etc. Ridden it seriously this whole time with no ill effect at all. chain even lines up. :noidea:

We installed that tire temporarily as I had it sitting around during the Supertex build...............back in September of 2009.............could be time for some new treads.

If not for the shock being down so long it definitely would have by now.

I've got both F2 and F3 wheels for my 86 and they are interchangeable, they even use the same spacers. The hub dimensions are the same but the F3 rim is 1/2" wider, not that it makes any difference as both wheels are wearing 160 tires anyway and the F3 wheel has to have a slightly flatter profile. I have a CBR900 rear mocked in there right now but I am not sure I am going to go to that trouble any time soon (not to mention the tire on it is crap and the two 160s have lots of life left).

The front wheels are really different between the F2 and F3. Not just the speedo drive but the rotors are different too. The F3 rotors are larger diameter and they are floating. I am going with the F3 wheels and different brake calipers altogether because the old differ is damn heavy compared to newer bikes that aren't RC51s.

what do you mean by a flatter profile for the f3 wheel? I'm debating on going with f2 or f3.....since I just purchased f3 front end I'd like to keep both wheels the same. So it's looking like an f3 rear. Also, I'd love to run a 180. That would look boss!!!! but bigger wheel probably = less torque.....=less speed and I'm a fat ass lol......so guess it doesn't matter either way except I feel as if I'm gunna fall over with the stock rear and that thing has just got to go.........

so I guess I need an f3 caliper bracket to go with my vfr stock caliper.....also gunna need a spacer from jamie right?

    f3 caliper bracket

so are you saying you can use the f3 caliper mounting bracket with the f2 wheel and f3 rotor? I'm a bit confused on this......is the f3 mounting bracket compatible with either f2 or f3 rear wheel and if so do you need to be running f3 rotors is that what you mean?

Also, are you saying I can mount up stock rear vfr'r 700 brake to this bracket and I'm good to go no need to change over to f3 rear brakes.....

you can use the F2 or F3 caliper bracket for the rear...they are the same..you are using the F2/F3 caliper INSTEAD of the VFR caliper. Look at your suspension SEPARATE from your ENGINE, thats how i kept it straight. Everything you are going to do to suspension is ALL F2 or F3...So whatever the widest tires is you can use for F2 or F3 is what you can use. IMO.

Yeah F2 and F3 are compatible EXCEPT for the F2 had the speedo drive in the front..and the F3 was a little wider in the rear rim. but everything else was the same...

so im going to need to run the f2 or f3 rear brake then not the vfr one, depending on which wheel I use? Does this mean I ca use the stock brake line with the f2/f3 caliper if so?

last question is can I run the f2 front wheel on the f3 suspension....I here the rotors on the f3 front wheel are bigger and free floating.......so I would think I would need to run an f3 wheel with an f3 front end...I was unable to find a 94 f2 front end...now I'm having to mix and match...

I am using the VFR REAR brake line cause the F2 brake line is longer by a LOT!!

I mighta told you wrong..i would go with the F2 wheel with F2 forks and F3 with F3..because the the F2 has room for the speedo between f2 forks. now you could go with spacers to offset but prolly just easier to keep everything the same. yeah i was looking for 94s also but wasnt really lucky so went with 91-93 and emulators. but F3 rims/wheels should be pretty plentiful. might wanna check , F4, F4i or cbr6rr...they didnt have speedo either, so i would THINK the wheel/ RIM would fit.
