Hey Gang, I have 2000 with 17k miles that I have owned from new. Pulled both wheels and muffler and had tires replaced. Now when bike is cold, it starts and idles @ 2K until the coolant temp reaches 155 F, then the idle shoots up to 4400RPM and stays there. Turn the bike off, let the temp reach below 150F and start again. Now it will go to 2800RPM and will eventually slowly drop down to 1300RPM after about 5-minutes at the 2800 RPM. It then will run fine until the next cold start. Have shop manual, but I think it must be a sensor or the ECM as all throttle likage is clear... Any ideas

The fuel injected bikes are much more difficult to diagnose because of the fuel lines but I would start with a visual inspection of the throttle linkage at the bodies to be sure the issue is not an unwanted opening. It is the very first step and no need to over think it past that.

Thanks Toe, I watched all the linkage with the throttle body exposed, and it all looks like it is working properly. I keep going back to the idle shooting up right as the temp gauge hits 155 f. Can you elaborate on "unwanted opening"
    Thanks

Could also be poor throttle plate synch maybe or something simple and electric, but carbs are SO much easier to deal with for us lads over 45 !

    "Unwanted opening?" What's that ??

Make sure nothing is in the way of the starter valve plate. Check to make sure ALL vacuum lines are connected. Honestly can't thank of anything that would be messed with when taking off the wheels or muffler that would be engine related. You sure that's all you touched?

Sorry about the delay, got called away.. Pretty sure that I did not touch or disturb anything while replacing the tires.. I think it may be a coincidence that a sensor went tits up while down for the tire replacement. I will go over all vacuum lines again tonight (4th time) and all connections under tank.. Real funny that it will idl right @ 1300 after a couple of starts and what appears is that the engine temp reaches about 195 F. Not sure if the ox sensors on the pipe where the muffler bolts on could cause this problem.
    Thanks for your time... proprod

I think what Toe Cutter is trying to convey is that Your throttle cable and/or choke lever might be stuck some where even though the lever might be all the way up. I am having the same exact problem that you are and in the next few days I will take apart the choke/idle adjustment line and remove any rust lube it. My throttle seems to be working fine.

Anything that could cause the linkage to not close, an obstruction in the linkage, linkage not hooked up or loose mounting, dead mouse. Does not take much with no load to elevate the idle that much. Just saying a close visual inspection of linkage is first.
