    Greetings from sunny Melbourne:cool: .
I have just picked up my 06 VFR800:caked: , and am currently enjoying running it in.
Having moved up from a 250 with no torque, I am not used to riding a bike that pulls away in any gear.
I have been told by the dealer not to lug or race the engine, but if I stick to this, I either ride everywhere in 2nd gear ( to try to keep to the speed limit of 60Kph - 37mph ).
Without (re)opening the topic of running in new engines, can anyone give me some indications as to what gear I should be in at what speeds please. The signed max speed limit on our roads tops out at 100Kph, and I have a deisre in keeping my license!

Not to re-open the topic of running in a new engine or anything, but for your brand new bike, you should kinda varry the gears so as not to keep one constant engine speed at a set road speed. Switch gears often, but dont go TOO high into a gear either so as to not put too much load on the engine either. I would ride in first for a while, then just shift to second for a bit, then to third, back to second. It may sound stilly, but letting the engine set properly now will give you tons more enjoyment and reliabilty down the years.

More AUS friends is what the USA needs:clap2:!!!

Welcome, not touching the breakin thing...just don't redline it or let her lug, varying RPM the key.

Personally I generally shift this bike either at 6500, just cruising...or at about 10k well beyond VTec kickin. Thats after breakin though..

Well, I'm kinda new to the VFR as well...so here's what I do naturally so far:

Mild acceleration in town... I shift
    1-2: 12mph/19kph
    2-3: 25mph/40kph
    3-4: 35mph/56kph
    4-5: 50mph/80kph
    5-6: 60mph/96kph

Of course, these are approximations...I don't stare at my speedo or anything.

LOL I just get the feel down and depending on what I'm up to will get me to shift for the conditions I'm looking for, so no one set time for any gear. Plus I look at the tach anyway, seems to like 5500rpms in 6th

It all depends who im riding with if im just driving with the flow of traffic or with my buddies with cruisers i keep it under 6500 just before vtec kicks in shift around 4500 to 6000. if i ride hard no traffic around i like to keep the vtec kicked in i shift 7000 to 10000 never redlined yet ithink all depends on your comfort level vfr is a very forgiving bike

Spent another day trying to keep it < 20 km/h over the limit. ( I thought that those days where behind me LOL ). It seems that the right wrist over rides the brain. If only the Minister for Strife and Anxiety knew what I can now get up to when no one is looking. Something like...Do you want me to QUICKLY go to the shops....

Not sure what the conversion is, as I get on average before the fuel light comes on 200 miles easy, I've seen 230 a couple times then in the fun stuff I see 165-180miles, all depends on the R's your turning. Congrats, now don't go and have to much "FUN" now :)

Yep, what he said; on my 86' if I'm behaving I get close to 50 miles per gallon. If I'm screwing around & going over 100 mph consistantly(which happens more frequently than the law would approve of) I get around 35 MPG.

The bike is Light on Fuel , make no mistake .
I have not run a full tank yet , but just with playing around with her the first few days , I can already tell that she is pretty damn Light on the juice .

Ill have to work it out sometime .

Varies with me. If I'm in town I often short shift. Out on the open road, I'll wind it on to 9-10k before I shift up...

I wound her up to 11 grand this morning . Im quite surprised how smooth it is at those revs .
Granted , I can feel the underpoweredness the guys speak of , but , for a first bike , Im completely Thrilled .

She runs stronger to a top speed in fifth , than in sixth , but i suppose thats normal .

These small 600's though are so FLipping Quick < i dont even stand a chance against them . Damn breakfast run turns into a mad dash to the finish .

IMO, where the VFR beats them is in the smoothness. I feel much more stable going through technical stuff than I did on the VFR. No crazy vibration from revving the piss out of it, but grated we carry much more weight so they will be a little slower. 0-60 in 3 secs should be quick enough for anyone anyway. For me, the most fun is in tight stuff at <75-80 mph anyway. And there is where the smotth power delivery makes easy work for me.
