I know many here swear by Gortex. I have had a few Gortex jackets and swear at them not by them. I don't know why everyone else has luck and I don't with that stuff. I finally heard of another person who met with similar luck with Gortex as I had.

Seems like if a backpack from MEC would hold up for that many miles, they would have a jacket and pants that would too. REI's Flagship store is Seattle. What you might do is ask the folk at MEC if they carry the NikWax line. Both REI and Aerostitch do.

From a scientific aspect, not much is impermeable, save a hard head.

BB. By NikWax are you referring to the detergents and waterproofing stuff applied to the garment? Yes they do, or did anyways. It was a pretty good product but again it did not hold up when I wore gortex out on the side of a freeway for four or five very cold and rainy sleet laden hours while we medivac'd a truck driver out and tried to clean up his overturned Suber- b train truck loaded with dimensional lumber. That was a bitch cause I was alone on that day.

It would be nice if this jacket was all I needed to pack on my upcoming 1 1/2 month tour throught the southwest.

    Randy,

NikWax is a line of products out of UK. All sorts of stuff for specific uses. I won a prize at the whole line at the CW show a few years back. I think the Soundrider crew still has it and might be showing it at the bike show later this month.

I don't think they recommend using any of it with GoreTex.. Not sure..

...and here I always thought all lumber was dimensional..;) I know that some dudes are delusional about the dimension of thier woodies.

Darn, you'd think The Queen would buy her "finest" at least a Corgie for a partner... LOL

We do have a product here that is very simlarily spelled to that but it could be an al together different product. But the stuff I am referring to actually says on the lable it is good for Gortex.

So. An update. Here it is January 7th 2012. Jacket has been out of my hands for over a month. I have not had a hell of a lot of success with feedback from Tourmaster other than their rep, Eli, being surprised by my tone of voice in a previous e-mail. Well, as most you know, I can get animated at times, but I have kept all my e-mails and may just share them here in due course. I guarantee you, that I am quite capable of preparing and delivering a factual and proper report or query without resorting to what many of you have seen here. My occupations for the past 30 years have made that necessary and my correspondence has seen scrutiny at fairly high levels. I had not said or wrote anything that I or anyone else should be embarrassed to write or say in the presence of any audience.

But here I am, still without and answer to the problem, and without my jacket that I paid fairly handsomely for. Below is an e-mail I sent to Tourmaster. Folks, I would seriously consider this after sale experience I received from Tourmaster if I were to purchase a new product.

    Eli,

I am getting extremely frustrated with Tourmaster. You commented in an email to me earlier you were surprised by my tone, yet my queries go un answered to an unacceptable degree. According to UPS tracking, this jacket arrived at your shipping dock 2011-12-09. That was just shy of one month ago. I have asked for a progress report yet have received no answer. What is the result of Tourmaster's testing on my jacket? When should I expect to get this jacket back? Presently I am riding in pouring rain, which I do have gear to keep me dry to a large degree, but I wear a leather jacket beneath. That is not warm in near or sub freezing temperatures.

I can understand that your position with the company may be such that you may be on promotional tours at this time as this is when most of the motorcycle shows are. But surely you read e-mails while you are gone, and someone from Tourmaster can provide me with some feedback.

I believe that a response, via e-mail please, from someone from Tourmaster is a reasonable expectation by the end business day Friday, 2012-01-13.

Stay tuned folks. Hopefully this will be over soon.

I'd have that letter translated into one of the more common Chinese dialects and address it to E. Lee % Fok Yoo Public Relations Ltd. in Beijing.

Well. Not reply yet. I suspect I will run into Eli at the Vancouver Motorcycle Show this coming Friday. The discussion should be interesting. Who knows. Maybe he will have some good new for me after all. But Tourmaster should do better than this at keeping in touch.

Well, still no reply to any of my e-mails. And I didn't even swear in any of them. I finally phoned them and spoke with someone who was going to check into it and as I requested, get back to me via e-mail with the results. Got home from work yesterday and read my e-mails:

    Dear Mr. Simpson,

Thank you for contacting us. We will check into the status of your return and get back to you shortly.

    Kind regards,

    Robert
    Tour Master
    Customer Service Dept.

So I get home from work today and check my e-mail again

    Dear Mr. Simpson,
We followed up on the status and it does not show that it has made it to the returns dept. You mentioned that you show that the package has been signed for. In some cases, the product has been signed for at the Front-desk, or other area and has been misrouted. Please provide us with a tracking number and we can continue to investigate.

    Kind regards,

    Robert
    Tour Master

WTF. There was one of their own documents filled out and placed inside that package. Even stupid people should be able to figure out where a package should go if it arrives at a business. So I respond:

It was sent via UPS from Chilliwack December 02, 2011 Standard shipping
tracking #H785 479 677 2. I followed up with that tracking number which UPS
came back advising the parcel was delivered to Calabasas Hills Ca and left
at the dock signed by galvez December 9, 2011 at 9:50. But this is a two
part question. First and most important where is my jacket and what were
the results of the testing. And almost as important, why were my e=mails,
several of them, not responded to. We could have found out a long time ago
that this jacket has gone astray and have taken steps to track it down. I
would likely have had the jacket back by now and wearing it. Yes I ride in
    the winter here.

I can only assume that no testing has been done. Please expedite this when
you locate the jacket. I have a 1 1/2 month long motorcycle trip coming up
to Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California and want this jacket or a
    replacement for that trip.

    Thank you

    Randy

I need a new pair of textile pants. What brand do you think I will NOT buy?

The burning question is why wasn't the jacket returned to the dealer? There is a certain chain of command there. First, do not let anybody in a dealership BS you into believing that there is nothing they can do about a faulty product. The mechanism is that the dealer contacts the sales dude, with the sotto voce implication that if the faulty product is not fixed or any other verb that fits, the next buy order will be either non-existant or a shortie.

This excludes of course, those wonderful R/R's that the great Honda in the sky thrust upon us sinners to show who the fuck was running the show.

    Today's email from Tourmaster:

    Randy,
Thank you for taking the time to get me this information. We understand your frustration. We're not sure what happened to it. We'll work on tracking this down for you. We apologize for the inconvenience and lack of response on the e-mails. We will locate the jacket and move to get your return resolved.

    Kind regards,

    Robert
    Tour Master/Cortech

Maybe this could turn out not quite as bad as I was fearing. None the less, it is still poor. They apologized for not getting back to me on my e-mails earlier but did not elaborate on why they did not in the first place. Before you go out and buy Tourmaster, hang on until I get mine back if they find it. I will post up what they tell me as to why I got wet in the first place.

This Tourmaster was also advertised as being waterproof too. Likewise for the Joe Rocket I had. I have three - two piece suits now so I think I will stop there. After R3 this year, I don't think I will be doing one hell of a lot of riding in the rain now. I mean retirement and everything. Except my annual trip down there I guess. At that time of year, BC, Washington and Oregon are a sure thing for rain.
