I am getting ready to repaint my VFR after an accident I had. My question is it worth while to repaint it the OEM color (R157) or go with another color of my choosing. I don't plan on selling the bike anytime soon, I would rather keep it and buy another bike. However I do realize that things change and I don't want to ruin the value of the bike by painting it a non OEM color. Also any color opinions are welcome, I am still unsure of the color I would choose if I paint it non OEM.

IMO - not being a classic bike of 25yrs old or more, as long as the color is tasteful and not some weird absurd choice, I don't think changing the paint will affect your value.

My original ideas where to go with either 06 white, 07 blue (RWB) without the vinyls, or the 08 candy red. Would it be easier/cheaper to have my painter just get close to a color rather than buying the OEM from colorrite. I have never repainted anything before unless it was with spray paint, so my experience in this category is very minimal.

is really a matter of taste. The value of the 6gen VFR isn't that great anyway, at least not right now, after the price slashing to move units in a bad economy.

sure, there will be a purist who will care about the color. The same purist would pass on your bike based on the fact that it's painted to begin with and not OEM panels.

I believe 90% of buyers won't either know the difference, or care enough, to affect the purchase price compared to others on the market. Assuming it's a great paint job. It's all a matter of personal taste. And as long as you choose a tasteful color (no pink or purple or f' up lightening bolts and pin striping), you should be able to find a buyer in a reasonable amount of time for an average asking price.

30yrs from now in 2042, things would likely be different.

A dead on match to the existing red ain't gonna happen. Red is fugitive. Best IMO to think in terms of a total repaint in red or when you make up your mind on another color or colors.

I'm agonizing over the same decision. I have a yellow 2000. Wasn't that the only year that VFRs were offered in yellow? I mean red ones abound!

Nearly everything I own is lime green. Those things that aren't, should be. It's the most awesome color in the world.

I know that any repaint lowers the value to a collector over a good original shine. I still think it would be easier to sell a repainted yellow 2000 VFR over a lime green one. I think that lime green may border on the 'weird and absurd' in some folks mind. Nothing beats an original style paint job if keeping value is concerned. Look at the muscle car market.

That being said, you can get Duplicolor quarts for about $25 at Autozone. That yellow is awfully close................

I've shot quite a few bikes and I have tried to use domistic automotive paint when I can. Costs less and alot easier if you have to ever touch up.

The yellow, from what I've found, is reported to be a two stage paint.

Through Sherwin Williams Automotive Finishes, I was able to get a custom mix that matches near perfect in the light but looks like a school bus in the shade of my garage.

    WHAT??? :faint:

What's wrong with Purple Tink? I'm painting my bike Purple. Dark Sparkle Purple at that!!! :whoo:

My sister's favorite color is Purple so we painted her bike first to see what the color would look like.

Hmmm.......... ya know now that you've got me thinkin' about it Tink I might just hafta paint some focked up lightning bolts on my spare gas tank and get me another set of fairings and pin stripe the livin' snot outta them like Eddie Van Halen used to do on his guitars just to see what that would look like.

    :focus:

That machine belongs to you now Funnybusiness paint it whatever color you like.
If the next guy down the line doesn't like it then he can repaint it whatever color he likes. Simple as that.
As far as colors go the sky's the limit. There's a ton of them out there so take your pick.

We're currently in the process of doing a complete repaint on my '03. Used to be the R157 Italian Red just like yours, gonna be Perfect Purple from the Liquid Crystal PPG Vibrance Collection.
The paint house we used advised us shoot an adhesion promoter on the plastic panels to give the paint we're using a little something more to grip onto. They also advised us to use flex additive in the clearcoat on the plastic panels as well.

    LOL.

Personally I'm really diggin' this Emerald City Green on my mirrors.

IMO, a collector would be more likely to buy one of Stosh's pieces than a stocker. Stockers suck!

If ya wanna find out the hard way, go to any bike event and strike up a conversation about how cool your stocker is..

I can chime in on a couple of things. I was actually not going to buy my VFR because it was yellow. Then my buddy at work pointed out how safe it would be, because it IS yellow. Do some reading on what colors we notice and you might decide that yellow really IS the cat's meow.

That said, yes only the 2000 came in yellow and yes it is a two stage page. Colorrite has both the base and color available in a number of forms form touch up pen to quarts.

Honda Y124P Pearl Shining Yellow - ColorRite

I believe the red is a two stage as well.

For a solid color I must say the 07 red is the only other that is remarkable to me. Good looking bike.

Best bet IMO on DIY or Howto bike painting is to shy away from the books on painting bikes and pop for a book on general car painting. Save a few bucks on paint by using Martin-Senour available at many NAPA stores. Good stuff and owned by Sherwin-Williams.

And with the two coat system, we're getting pretty spendy, even with Colorrite.

    There's always lime green..........
