Are you smoking crack, Seeman? You think that a bike brand whose name is a byword for poor quality and constant need for maintenance will somehow end up costing the taxpayer less? Psshhtttt.

That thread you linked to is a typical H-D Forums failthread. "Ah want mah taxes tuh pay fer 'murican bikes only. Dey tuk our jerbs!" Idiots. Why don't you tell your RUB friends the true facts about where Harley componentry comes from?

BTW, I laughed particularly hard at the wanker who said that he refuses to stop for any cop who isn't riding a Harley. - That guy is both a tool and a liar.

its all about the dollar, the towns can use them bar & shield bikes for 3 to 4 years and make their money back on them! its simple egno-momics...What amazes me is that there are kuckle draggers that line up to buy that used up crap. I love Grand Marquis and looked at used police interceptor Crown Vics, those cops ride/drive that shit like they have no care in the world. All the cars I bought used were civilian owned and never really fucked me over. And besides, who the hell would want a used bike/car that some fat donut eating bastard was using, talk about bad Karma...SHeeeeSH

Side note, I had an opportunity to test ride a high mileage ex police BMW boxer with something like 120,000 clams on it. You know what? One of the most together bikes I rode, it might have been an exception to the rule though. Who knows.

I thought the Hyosung model was kinda nice, they really need to show her from the back bending over the bike though.

Not to get too far afield from the topic but this is a picture I took in the parking lot of Maxim Honda. There was some kind of motorcycle cop gathering and there were representatives from four North Texas counties present. Hondas, Harleys and BMWs it didn't matter, those guys could RIDE!

My maintenance crack was tong in cheek but the real reason for the Harley is the ride, seat, hight is very low compared to all the other bikes. The newer 2010 Harleys produce a ton of heat which makes it very uncomfortable until you spend enough to get rid of the CAT, enrich the fuel, and open up the exhaust flow, I would most likely never spend close to $20,000 or more on just the bike and then $2,000 to $3,500 to get it ridable but lot's of "Harley Dudes" do.

That is the precise reason they are called harleydoods. Before global warming they were known as harleyduds.

Me, I can't for the life of me even understand just a little why anyone would pay any money for a Harley, let alone pay more than most other brands. There are a couple of responses here from people who have Harleys and other bikes...Can you tell me what made you want a Harley? I've never asked this question before...But it is worthwhile to maybe hear an answer...What makes a Harley such a popular cruiser that so many will buy them for high dollar, despite their being less able than other less expensive and more dependable bikes?
Harleys do seem to make people have an identity, I guess...and I don't really think they are awful or worthy of scorn or that the people who ride them are 'lesser' than anyone else...I just don't "get em"...they leave me ice cold...someone asked me....You want my Harley?....I would say yes, but I wouldn't ride it more than a mile or two to the nearest dealer to trade it in for a modern design..
    Potato potato potato .........

If you look at the couple of states that gather the data and publish it, sometimes the Harley and BMW come out close to the same total price.

Imports might be cheaper but that doesn't mean they are't just as good or maybe better. As far as affording a Harley you can pick up just about any used 2010 or less for around $11,000 or less cash. I don't miss my Harley except the way she looked and sounded but then she is 95 FLSTN didn't handle all the well or stop that great and since I've never had the Blue Oster biker outfit I moved on to better ride for me. I don't understand the superior attitude just because someone is willing pay the outrages price for a new Harley that will need $3,500 dollars of "upgrades" just to make it ridable. Been around Harleys for most of my 54 years even back in the 70's they where closer to the junk side of bikes but the owners liked the fact that you had to be able to keep fixing it to keep it going more like a cult thing anyone could ride an import since you didn't have to wrench on it all time.

Wow! I think I get it now...the whole deal with Harley. Someone responded with his reason for liking Harleys and for being willing to pay extra to get one... He opined that Harley is like an American car as opposed to something generic from Japan...he cited a "Nissan..something.." Some stuff about chrome and V8, etc. OK, I get that, I think.
I might, if I had plenty of extra money, choose to drive 1948 Ford Woodie wagon built at super high dollars, rather than say...A Porsche Cayenne or some other modern full size SUV that works ....I love the sound of a flathead V8 motor and glasspack mufflers. They'd keep up on the freeway..The flathead motor configuration is pretty old school and those drum brakes suck, but so what? They are really cool.

But would I pay top dollar for a replica late 60s K-car? Or a 51 Plymouth with it's semi-automatic fluid drive?...no, probably not. I guess Harley guys would like to think their bikes are like ...GTOs or Shelby Cobras or big block Chevys.....but using the 'Murikan Kar comparo....I'd think more along the lines of 53 Buick Roadmaster or maybe Chrysler or how bout a 52 Mercury?

Wonder what "they" would build a brand new Willys Overland Station Wagon for today? My dream ....(grin)

I got both a Harley and sport bikes. Guess I'm lucky enought to have my high priced woodie wagon but also fortunate enough to also hop on my sport bike. Some got it like that, and some don't.

    I love my Harley-Davidson
I love it like my life
    I even love it better
Than I even love my wife
    I love to lubricate it
and grease it up real good
I'd really like to fork it
    If I really could.

In a fair comparo, the high priced woody would be the HD and the low priced woody would be the VFR if one had both or two woodies. For that, we'd need a pic as evidence but not as a calendar submission.
