I have been looking at the vfr 1200 lately ,one of the things that bother's me is what appears to be a loud rattle noise that comes from the exhaust when you give it a decent rev (with the bike stationary)
Can I assume this noise is simply the flap in the rear of the muffler and once it is removed the rattle noise goes away, likewise I assume a aftermarket slip on would remove this rattle as well ????

Ya know, I was just looking at a 1200 today. Didn't ride it, but did get to start it and play with it in every other way.
It had the same noise you describe.....i'm sure it was identical. Don't have any idea what it was, but apparently they just do it.
What a bike eh??? I am nuts about this new VFR.

I don't remember a rattle but it has it's own sound not like a straight four or a vee twin with the stock silencer it reminded me of a Honda Civic until you get her over 4k rpm when the deep growl comes alive. Put the Two Brothers on her and now she has a very nice deep growl all through the rpm range. [IMG]

It started on mine at around 500miles. Probably will get worse. Keep taking the bike in and put it under warranty make them keep replacing the thing. If they can't fix it then you have grounds for lemon law on the motorcycle.

The rattle on mine sounds like it is coming from somewhere in the header area. it has an aftermarket exhaust and the rattle happened with both exhausts.

I looked for anything loose under there. so far nothing. I might try to look at tightening up the header bolts when i get a chance to get in there again. I know that caused some rattle/leakage on any I4 that I have had over time. Who knows. Just like rattles on other bikes I have had, I just turn up the tunes on my headset and dont worry about it too much.

    Rattle

I also heard the rattle and found that it is the exhaust flapper valve. I reached in and held it closed with a screwdriver and the rattle went away. I am not sure if there is anything one can do to stop it, but now that I know, I am not worried about it.
