Top Ten Best Sounding Motorcycle Engines

3 separate Honda engines; RC166, NR750, and (drumroll) our dear and favorite 750cc 90° V4. Makes me happy to see it place

    Agree/ disagree?

    Because I agree wholeheartedly

The gen 4 and 5 sound awesome with decent pipes.

Duc's sportsbikes generally sound great (almost as good as a viffer).

I like lumpy v sounds so some of their other choices didn't appeal to me.

Harleys sould good but I generally hate the sound due to wankers putting on pipes that are offensively loud...

Other than the inclusion of HD, I have no objection to the list. I know everytime I ride my 5th Gen, listening to the Staintune music never fails to put a smile on my face.

    KC-10 FE out...

The only thing I would add is the three cylinder inline 2 strokes.

If by R1 you mean the '09+ Crossplane crank R1 with a full Akrapovic system then yes they sound great.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to all ten. I still like the 5th gen VFR better than any other. The R1 crossplane was a close second. I also have a Harley Road king w/ stock exhaust and the sound at idle is still pleasing.

ive always love the CBX inline 6 motors....and if youre gonna say R1, you best specify that its the 2009+ R1's, cause the 2008 and earlier sound like any other I4 (at least to me). I've become VERY partial to V motors like the RC51, Aprilias, and Ducatis. That Desmosedici RR is music to my ears as much as the RC212V, and my own little V4.

One of my favorites, 125cc engine, no flywheel, 22,000rpm redline, 1965.

    Turn up the speakers:

Good find, brother. I'd love to hear one in person

I'm a fan of the Norton Rotary IOM TT racers of the late 80s, early 90s

My Trumpet Triple with the factory Arrow exhaust (db killer removed), at full song, under load, I think would move them up from 8th on the list...

I do still love the sound of my old Viffer too...

My problem with that list is that the V-4 they chose was an RC-30, which uses the 360 crank. I think the normal VFR sounds better - and just as good as the Ducati V-4. Not that I don't like the 360 V-4's, and the VF1000R sounds just as good as the RC-30 and 45's, and the NR750 that also made the list uses a 360 crank (and sounds a LOT like a VF1000R with a good pipe). But the 180-degree VFR's produce a chill-making sound that begins at idle and gets better all the way to the limiter. I love my Triumph triple as well, and the 270-degree parallel twin in my Scrambler. Inline 4's with conventional firing sequences do nothing for me (other than irritating the f*^k out of me in the hands of inconsiderate squidboyz).

^ Interesting point regarding the 180 vs. 360 degree crank.

Being a fan of the VF500F, NC30, RC30 & kR these models all share the same 360 degree design. I've often wondered why Honda made the change to the 180 degree crank for the VFR750/800 series.

Perhaps this is a topic for a new thread? It would be interesting to get the 411 on the performance differences between these engine designs.

The 'switch' seems to be an important part of Honda's V4 history (and lamented by some). I think this would make a great topic for discussion here on VFRW.
