So i started noticing some bad chain slap on my 98 VFR800Fi and now I need to adjust my chain so its alittle tighter. The only problem, I dont know how to do that. Can anyone help a brotha out and walk me through tightening my chain? how long does it usually take?

You need to loosen the 17mm bolt in the picture.

Then turn the eccentric collar with the Gangly wrench.

How many miles on the chain ?? If more than 20,000 miles it probably needs replacement.

The tension should be adjusted at the tightest spot on the chain while the chain is cool, not after a ride.

Remember that over-tightening can damage the transmission and sprockets and is much worse than a loose chain.

Since it seams like you are new to the vfr and I was too just a few months ago, I learned the first time I adjusted mine that it can be tightened in either direction. The mechanism eccentric collar is oval shaped, so if it gets looser the first direction you move the spanner wrench, try the opposite direction, or go all the way around until it gets tight.

FYI - If you read the shop manual, you'll find out that you should turn the adjustment collar in the same direction as the wheel turns ie, ccw looking at the sprocket.
