If the bike is already leaking fluid you should just convert it into a Harley.

Build the Street fighter! We have cafe racers a plenty and Toe amazed us with the tech wizardry. It's time for some thing Brutal yet refined. There should be lots of good engineering problems to be solved in opening up the V4, and some clever work on the front end would be interesting.
Something that makes lesser men pale and women go weak at the knees or vice versa.

    the ugly remove

I guess I should have considered an option #5; keep scavenging salvage parts until she's restored to a normal 5th gen

subframe, rear shock, seat, tank, tail plastics, fairing stay, bars, forks, dash, windscreen, tail pipe & can, probably more. Easy $1500 in parts before paint (some plastics I have would have to be welded) many many hours

Well, if you want to go back to 5th gen, but do something different/custom-ish, I have a 6th gen subframe and tail plastic. If you dont want to go that route and need an exhaust, I still have my gen5 jardine can and mid pipe waiting to find a home.

well there's a neat concept BWeiss. That would require custom exhaust and custom seat. I'll need to decide if I want to build this for myself with the intention of keeping it or if it makes more sense to restore it on the cheap to OEM and make a dime.... Decisions, decisions...

Well, just let me know what you decide, they've got your name on it if you want them. Just taking up space in my storage, and then the future garage.

You wouldn't have to do much for the custom exhaust. 5G and 6G exhausts are nearly identical with respect to how they collect and where they exit the bike from underneath. Infact, a popular 6G mod is to replace the stock headers with 98-99 headers.

Anything but a streetfighter. Done too often IMO.

also a fan of the BMW F800GS (as well as the tiger 800)

The idea of putting it back togther is a good one. Even doing what BWeiss suggests...maybe a VFR generation 5.5 build?

no worries, I just don't think fighter is my style. I'd rather tour the long back state roads of a 4-500 mile day or explore the dirty mountain passes. Terrorizing the neighborhood on a SF isn't my style.

Bweiss could be on to something. A 6gen tail with 5th gen front and a custom seat to tie it together. That could possibly be done without looking like a complete abortion.

Love the modern and robust look of the inverted forks. Have wanted to do a retrofit for some time. However, I spoke to the local suspension guy and he didn't recommend it. His statement was to the affect that the forks and the frame are designed to work together. If you remove the flex from the forks but the frame wasn't designed for it, then you can have adverse affects in handling and durability.

Not sure that I ride well enough to know the difference. Clearly the same issue would be present had I decided to throw MX forks on the front and make it a crossrunner. I'll have to speak with the suspension guy about this some more.

I've always liked the bioblade, but it doesn't quite mesh together as nicely as a factory bike. not bitching mind you. it looks very nice. I even like what they did with the front. it's just something about the seat/tank/subframe area...

All true, both the tail mods and Suzuki forks I did on the gen 3 took alot of fabrication but I ended up happy with it. Not that there is anything WRONG with restoring a gen 5 stock, awesome bike, just a great opertunity to build something one off and special.

.... side note, the rapidly aging gen 3 body in Her bike MAY be getting swapped out for some other body this winter, not nessisarily Honda. It's just so old and cracked up that getting taken off and on and off again is taken it's toll. Let alone the drops.
