Has anyone figured out how to convert the VFR1200F to GP Shift?

You don't have enough torque to stay in a higher gear than you might think is optimum while leaned over. Ride a 250 Yamaha gp bike for a while. My advice would be to stay in a taller gear until you get a bit straigher. Otherwise get your welder out and fix it up.

Some of the later Goldwings have a reverse and I just saw a Yamaha cruiser with a rig attached kind of like training wheels that has it's own motor for reverse.

I would like to convert my 1200 to a tank shift with a suicide clutch.

Or, do what camo suggests, whatever that means.

Or maybe if you have the 1200 with the slushbox you could turn the shifter thingy upside down and change your name to Valentino.

More power to you if you can go to GP shift after riding on the street. Dont know about your experience level, but for me after 20 years of street riding, it was impossible for me to convert my brain to the opposite of what I was used to doing.

Its not that I didnt try, my YSR 50 was set up GP style and I would constantly be miss-shifting. Converted it back to regular one down four up and everything was good. My race bikes stayed with the same theme.

There are pros that did not use GP shift pattern. Main one comes to mind, Mat Mladin...Anyway gud luck with that Cheers

Why do you care if I like a reverse shift pattern batter than stock??

FYI I raced superbikes and supersport bikes for 12 years. Ran white plates for nine of those years. I have boxes of trophies. I sometimes have trouble remembering the stock shift pattern due to my reactions from racing.

When I want to wind out my VFR, say 1st through 4th gear, it is much quicker to simply tap your foot down than pull it up and backwards when you are actually leaning forward...for me anyway.

Not only that, but I seem to miss a gear every once in a while. Reverse shift makes for much surer and faster upshifts and far fewer missed shifts.

    Its my personal preference.

I like my clutch and brake levers at different positions than stock too...is that also politically incorrect???

I say fuck conventionalism, I always finger fuck anything I have to spend time on, from a bicycle, tri-cycle to motor-cickle  and that includes moving levers and even lengthing or shortening shift levers thru welding.

could always build a thrown out of em or use em for fire wood ; ) I gots mine too. btw I hated GP shift as I already stated but thats just my preference and has nothing to do with conventionalism or political correctness or my bodies ergonomics. Just my brain being fried out to the regular street shift pattern. Was entertaining riding old Limey bikes and some HDs with the shift on the right side gota tell you. Then again I dont use much rear brake anyway sooOO....Nuff-Sed

Or a box to put them in unless you stop being shifty.

If we are nice can we have both? Those stickers when ya take them off a red bike leave impressions where the paint doesn't fade. Next, I want to try the old Indian throttle on the left trick and we still ain't got this down to up or up to down shit or which side of the bike all those damn things go?

Shifting on the right and up for first and the rest down is great for American flat track. The 1200 could be modded to run the AMA Pro circuit I suppose. Not good in OZ where those dudes can't even get thier seasons right.

no. but you can have a K&N air filter, remove the snorkel, and block the PAIR.

oh yea, and a CPU fan jerry rigged onto your RR.

You know what's funny? My kids are learning to ride their Honda 50 now. I get them to ride by themselves in a straight line toward me and stop. So far, when they ride up to me, I accidentally grab the throttle from the front and twist it back! It threw Joshi off, and it gave Jonathan a hell of a lurch. I'd hate to see what would happen if I reversed my own throttle!

I'd hate to think what the bill would be if one were to shift down instead of up or vice versa and grab a handfull of throttle in the wrong direction on one of those sphincter pucker twisties.

I like to watch the little dudes. Some are just not bike material and others are hooked at two.. They have this look when they see a bike..

I hear you there it has been many years since I ran my gixxer on the track w/ GP shift and I still catch myself going to push down to shift up on my 6th gen.

FYI to all that say you need to be Vale or Mat to run gp shift, it is much better to ride with this pattern and way easier on the tranny as well.

To Rocket, I am waiting for the local honda shop to get in another 1200, hope next week some time. I will stop in and take a look to see what can be done to do it. I need to measure the forks anyway to see if it would be worth a swap on my 6th gen.
I will PM you when I have something.

Another alternative is to dump the current bike and pick up an old Harley Ironhead. They shift that way. You will have to ditch the peanut tank though. they only hold about a gallon and get worse mileage than a 1200. Bad news if ya get a Jo-jo Jones in the middle of nowhere.

Yikes!! Isn't that the LAST brand of bike that could possibly need GP shifting? Kind of like getting a lightning shifter in my minivan, isn't it?
