Two questions ive often asked..whats it worth and what would you pay? Im sure we've all run across a Gen 2 VFR for sale that was either a great deal or the guy was totally out of his mind. Like most on here im always looking for parts and bikes..so heres my take on the questions and would love to hear input from others.

A parts bike is a parts bike..depending on whats there $300 max. Most ive found the person just wants to get them out of their lives and make a few bucks.

A running bike of course depends on overall original condition and mileage..mods are mods..you're never gonna get your money back..to one man mods are great to another mods are a mistake..its like building that $100k hot rod and selling it on Barrett Jackson for $40k..thats life.

Now taking into account the VFR has no collector value and we are talking about a 25yr old bike with 25yr old technology you have to think with your head and not your heart when it comes to buying one.

so for me my max price is $1500 for what i would consider a very nice bike..a complete bike not missing anything with decent mileage around 30k or less. Will i pay more if its an exceptional VFR in pristine condition with super low miles? Maybe go $1600 or even $1700 but it would have to be immaculate!

So theres the answer to my questions..how bout you? Maybe our answers will help someone looking to get into their first VFR and need a lil guideline on whats a fair price.

I would pay up to around $2300 for a pristine 86-87 VFR without any mods.

Dutch, lemme know when you find a clean, unmolested VFR under 30K miles for $1500?

Or for that matter a mint, immaculate one for an extra $100 or even $200, m'kay........

As for the Gen1 collectability, that is exactly what they are. They were icons in the sport bike world back in the day. Take a gander at the website called Raresportbikesforsale.com They rarely have VFR750/700 showing up on there.

ive had 3 (including my current) 2nd gen VFR's, and im gonna have to somewhat disagree with ya, dutch. i paid roughly 1200 for both of the running bikes ive had....one was in okay shape (tho the body was falling apart), and the first had been just outright abused, but it ran like a raped ape. I have bought an 86 model 700 for a parts bike, and even tho it wasnt in ridable condition when i bought it, it at least ran (and taught me that i really dont like kerker exhausts). honestly, if i were to find a cherry 86 model 750 with no mods and the miledge wasnt outrageous, id be happy to pay 2500 bucks for it. as for the 700's, id be more prone to pay 2000-2200 in real good condition, depending on the bike.

I know its a lot about passion..i wouldnt pay $25k for a new harley nor would i pay $2500 for an old vfr.

Sadly, VFRs are undervalued cuz people are ignorant mostly and don't understand motorcycle history and our economy is in the shitcan.

Dutch, please don't say it has no collector's value cuz there is one in the Barbor museum !!!!!

My determination of fair value (average selling price) is between $1500 and $2400 depending upon condition and mileage.

Please note: Squirrelman his ownself has a good-running '86 700 R/W/B for sale on our classifieds for only $1350 !!!!!!!!!

"If it's ex-squirrelman, you know it runs strong."

I paid 'more than $2500' for my '86 750 - because it already had more than $1000 worth of upgrades on it that I would want anyway (CBR wheel conversion, twin-clicker, race tech, yosh pipe, etc.) and it had otherwise been very well cared for. It was worth it to me, and the bike rides as good as it looks ...

Chris71 hit on another good point. The 750's are worth more than the 700's. Something like a 5:1 production ratio makes the bigger bike all the more "rare".

But yeah, in this economy, there sure are some bargains to be found. I just picked up a mint 1998 CBR900RR for $3400, only 13K on it, and completly stock excedt for a carbon fiber Yoshimura slip-on RS-3, and the owner installed a brand new battery on the morning I picked it up. So maybe one can beat the bushes in this buyers market.

But that 86 750 Dutch bought is a really good swipe. I hope you gave the seller a kiss and a huig before you stole it from him!

Wow... Then including the cost of the missing bar ends and a throttle grip/tube I had to order, and considering it's only the lowly 700, I friggin STOLE mine! :biggrin1:

Given the time and effort that Yonan put into your bike you stole it from him, or he gave it away........point of view I guess. Good score none the less.

No argument from me about that. He set the price; but I'm not sure he was aware how serious I was about wanting that bike.

I looked for my 86 for about 3 weeks non stop checking every site I could think of, in the north east region (NH, MA, ME, VT, CT, RI, NY, NJ, PA). Based on what I saw, and decided I was willing to spend, here is what I determined:

    With R,W,B paint:
    VFR750F excellent condition $2500 max
    VFR700F excellent condition $2000-$2400
    VFR700F/VFR750F good condition $1500-$2000
    VFR700F/VFR750F average condition >$1500

    Painted some other color >$1000
Parts bike with everything but good paint and body panels in running condition $500 max.

Here is how I would classify the conditions
Excellent - good shiny paint, few scratched, at most 1 small crack, <95% stock, good running condition, need nothing

Good - good paint, few scratches, 1-5 small cracks, <90% stock, good running condition, may need one or two simple things

Average - good paint (may need an slightly abrasive coat of wax), some scratches (some might come out with abrasive wax), small cracks and 1-2 larger ones (nothing to serious or beyond repair), <85% stock, good running condition, may need a few parts.

I bought my bike in what I would consider in the average condition for $1400. You can see pictures in my bike thread (it looks a little worse up close). Did I get I good deal no, but I think I got a fair price maybe a slight deal. I settled because I got fed up with looking, not having a bike, and it was acceptable to me. I am was not looking to get this bike for it pure sporty characteristics, I would have kept my CBR is that was the case. I wanted a VFR7XXF because I love the way the look, it would be more comfortable than my CBR, and I find the V4 to be a very cool engine. I still am looking for these bikes in my area and nothing else has popped up so might not have been such a bad buy.

    I wish I could find these $1500 VFR750F beauty's.
