Randy, be careful... it appears that BB has taken an interest in your tool and wants to take you to Brokeback Mountain.... I kinda figured he went that way, but wow, I didn't expect him to be so blatant about it!!

My '03 did not come with the onboard tool kit either Road Warrior. I went to the Honda dealer and picked up the chain adjusting tool only.

For the tool kit I picked up a Cruz Tools metric kit and added a Motion Pro mini chain press. They offer quite a few different size metric tool kits, take your pick.

Here's the link to the Cruz Tools webpage. Click me.>>>>>Metric Tool Kits - CruzTOOLS

Just a heads-up,the info I've got says those Black plastic bolt caps for the grab rail bolts are about $2.35 at the Honda dealer. Part number is 91456-MCW-D01.

Kind of. Keep in mind there is an hourly rate, a gratuity included, portal to portal rate structure and mileage included in the package payble in USD. That Canadian scrip looks weird.

Ummmm.... Randy...?? Sounds like a good deal, you might want to investigate. He will pay you hourly, tip you, and pay your transport including mileage to Brokeback Mt.!!! So you have to accept US$... that's not so bad... you'll have to go to OR where the one road BB rides is washed out, though, so I guess it won't be too much fun. Might be worth investigating though... sounds like a sweet deal... maybe get him to front you the money then go on your own vacation!!!

OK you asked for it sorry it is a long reply but hopefully it will answer the original post and give some pointers for useful additions. The kit on a 2006 model will be similar but the non ABS kit will have an extra preload spanner.

Like others have said, if your bike is serviced regularly these things rarely have problems. In the official tool kit I have used the C spanner set to adjust chain tension, but otherwise in over 50,000km I have only had to replace a couple of blown bulbs.

I guess whether it makes sense to carry any tools really depends on what sort of riding you do, where you ride, the sort of roads you will encounter and most importantly if you will be in remote locations especially any without mobile phone coverage. However as punctures are the most likely problem which can leave you stranded, some sort of get you home tyre repair kit is a very useful addition, which has been used successfully to help other riders rejoin group runs.

Under the seat I carry the official honda supplied UK VFR800ABS tool kit (weight 800 grams)
The contents are listed on page 91 of the owners manual as follows -

    plastic tool bag 12x21cm
    adjustable pliers
rear wheel swing arm adjuster/chain tensioner C spanner
    C Spanner cranked extension bar
    spark plug spanner
    open ended 10/14 spanner
    open ended 8/12 spanner
    Allen/hex key 5mm
    Allen/hex key 6mm
    ring spanner 14/17
    ring spanner 10/12
    screwdriver handle
    No 2 flat blade head
    No 2 phillips head
    8mm box/nut head
    0.7mm feeler gauge

Yes the official kit more or less fills up all the space under the seat and used to be a real pain to fit back in. However much more useable space can be created under the seat by the judicious removal of several minor plastic tabs - just make sure they are not needed to locate/hold the seat or locking mechanism. This has proved very useful as I do a lot of long range touring and wanted to keep luggage space for clothes etc. Once modified I typically have the following extra stuff under the seat:-

    Extras - General

2 x 70cm bungee cords (handy for unexpected gifts) (weight 100 grams)

Plastic zip loc bag with 20 euro note for fuel and a pack earsoft ear plugs (weight nothing!)

Halfords Motorbike Spare bulb kit (weight 100 grams) Contents -

plastic zip loc pouch with foam liner
    headlamp bulb
    indicator bulb
    stop/brake light bulb
    license plate bulb
box assorted fuses and minor bulbs
    spare relay
    small coil insulated wire

    Extras - Tools

Lidl - long reach wobble/ball end hex key set (weight 300 grams)
    (9 keys from 1.5 to 10mm)
1 x long reach socket (needed if you fit RG racing crash bungs)

Cargol emergency tyre repair kit (weight 350 grams) Contents -

narrow nose pliers (pulling out nails)
4 x assorted cargol turn & go snap off repair plugs
1 x compressed air cylinder to tyre valve adapter
4 x compressed air refil cylinders
1 x cylinder mesh netting (stops cold burns)
    drawer cord carry pouch 20x8cm

Extras - Running spares (weight 100 grams)

    Emergency cable repair kit
    2 reels insulation tape
    length of duck tape
    pack hand cleaning tissues
    pair mechanic surgical gloves

Normally carried on the bike in tank bag

    Iphone with -
    ICE phone number
phone number of breakdown service and insurers
    pdf of VFR owners manual
pdf of European Honda dealer address list and contact info
medical insurance policy number and contact data
    credit card/money
license and VFR ownership papers (in case you get stopped)

Only on very Long distance trips

Sample size tube of spray chain lube
0.3litre Sample size engine oil sae10w40
spare spark plug ngk - IMR9B-9H

    Hope that helps

Yikes! Somehow I don't think Randy would go for one of those scams that Bubbachica is promoting. Aside the conflation what we may be observing is a fine case of "tool" envy.

    From the dark side:

Sylvia Plath Reads 'Daddy' - YouTube

    From the light side:

The road repair up to Mary's Peak is almost complete. A benefit of this is that the road will stay open during the winter. Travel is at one's own risk. Those who are primarily slab slammers should avoid this road even in mid-Summer. While not exactly Pike's Peak I would advise caution even on a nice day. The grade is mountainous and climbs to +/- 4,000 ft in roughly 7.5 miles. Going splat on one of the dropoffs is ouch bigtime.

Thanks for the suggested list of tools. My VFR did not have any tools. And I have used the tools that come in the kits on my other bikes. My wife had a problem with the fuel line on her bike. Luckily we had everything we needed under the seat. I've also found that some 5 minute epoxy, zip ties and a little duct tape are must have items.

I noticed there are two Pin Spanners on the parts list. It's part #89201-MR8-000 and #89202-KV0-000. They both are around $13 each + shipping. I'm also assuming you need to pick up the handle part# 89256-MT4-000. This is a previously owned VFR so there is a Power Commander located in the tool compartment. The Pin Spanner may be stashed somewhere on the bike. But, I have no idea where to look. It's hard to imagine they would just throw it away.

Even with ABS, the PC can be routed to the OTHER side under the tail without causing damage or stress to the wiring, it's frackin tight, but I did it. I woulda just moved the tool kit to the other side but mother Honda decided that the other side should be shallower and unable to hold their bulky but mostly useless tool kit  In any case, it takes a bit of time and creative routing but not too much more disassembly and no fluid bleeding or refills involved either.
