you'll have to give the rear end a lift with a new spring... then cut out the rear fender.... redo the tail lights...... find exhaust that will fit.. and fabricate the pipes and try to find a decent route up under the seat.. oh yeah, you may have to wrap the pipes with muffler wrap to cut the heat down so you don't burn you arse..

not to sound negative about that plan.. I thought about doing the same thing to my 86... way to much down time and there is a lot of engineering things that would take me some time to figure out... but mostly the down time would suck...

    good luck

Undertail exhausts do look cool, I agree. But functionally, they suck. The put more heat into the seat, crowd passenger space, and raise the bikes center of mass, making it handle worse. You'll notice most new bikes are going away from the undertail setup in favor of a low lightweight single exit pipe that lowers the center of mass, saves a significant amount of weight and keeps heat away from the rider(s). Your better off with a set of pipes in the stock location if you can get your hands on some.

My favorite from Italy... the MV, but much work is necessary.

MV had some issues with Hardleys redesign, 60HP, 800 pounds and manditory design flaw vibrations never were implimented but HD was sure sales would increase.

Finally, someone sees the light! Davis, you are right on the money!
    I have a '98 and '02 and I take the '98 over the '02 anytime. The '98 exhaust
is simple, low and functional. Trying to make your bike look like a Ducati 916
    is, IMO, off track.
Years ago I had an '86 VFR750 and loved the stock exhausts.
Most times . . . stock is king!

yea but after realizing that they have NO idea how to manufacture or market *real* motorcycles, HD has subsequently sold MV off already, after only a year of owning them. I'm not sure who bought MV, but I really hope that MV's new parent company/entity keeps pushing the brand forward.

well thanks for the help guys... the down time thing really convinced me not to do it at the time being and functionally, also a deal breaker. Maybe once i get another bike i'll start doing silly things with my 1st gen.

    thanks all!

MV Agusta was owned by Harley for just over a year...
Harley purchased MV Agusta so they could import Harley Davidson to Italy without the high Tarrifs Italy puts on Harley Davidsons. Italy squashed that idea so Harley took a loss and sold MV Agusta back to the Italians...

As for the undertail exhausts, you will never re-create the sexiness and exquisite balance of the Ducati Superbikes so in my opinion it's a waste of time to put an undertail exhaust on a VFR. For a classic VFR, stock or period correct performance pipe is best.

If you really want to do a 'restomod' thing with the VF-F, do the kind of things that will add performance *and* a different look. The undertail thing is a huge undertaking that would IMHO make the bike *less* functional (because of heat mostly).

    Some ideas? Hmmm...

I don't know that I've seen anyone do a 17" wheel conversion on a gen 1, and that would help the bike's appearance *and* it's capability.

Along with the front wheel conversion, replace the forks or have some serious work done on them - cartridge emulators, race tech valves, etc.

That engine is capable of 100+ hp without too much strain. Make some relatively simple mods and you'll have some serious performance improvement. While you have the engine out, get the dogs undercut so you won't have transmission problems later.

... and kindly post pics here while this project is in progress.

I can't imagine my bike without an underseat exhaust.

I'm curious... how long did that project take?

It's beautiful, btw... but there was a bit of downtime...

    Going the other way

I've got an '07 with a LV CF exhaust.
I'm engineering a double muffler side mount on the right side of the rear wheel that will stack the mufflers on top of each other. It should shorten the pipes by about 14"+
The passenger foot peg brace and the right luggage bracket will be used for muffler bracket mounting points.

    It will be different.
