Just gotta 1996 vfr w/ 16500 miles for $2000

    Thanks for all the great advise. I am a cheap guy because I am a student and right now its time for moving to new place(deposit money is a lot) and time to pay fall
    fees. So I am broke. I need to strech my dollars until I get my deposit from old place back and I sell my Magna . But at the same time I don't want to ride an unsafe bike or cause more damage to the bike.
    I hope you all can understand. :)
    I think I am going to get a chain a sprocket kit . And get that continental sport touring tire(it is the cheapest brand name tire in size) .
    BTW any one in sac area have a chain toil that I can borrow.

    It looks good to me. Usually the sides of the teeth are worn such that the tooth comes to a point instead of the flat top at the end. If anything it may have some wear down at the bottom root area where you see the shiny surfaces--the radius of the circular sections appears to have some elongation, but it may be the camera angle. That wear is from running the chain too tight. Since it wasn't lubricated it wore and stretched quickly, then it was adjusted back tight and run some more and stretched again, adjust, rinse and repeat the cycle...It doesn't look too wallowed out, if money is tight then i would use it and save up.

    after reading all the advise about changing the chain/sprocket as a kit i have decided to sell my cannondale R500 to raise the money to get the kit from sprocket center. Hopefully I it will last me 30k miles. depending on how much money i get for the cannondale i will get gud rear tire.


    But i still need to borrow a chain press and rivet tool. Maybe i will ask on craigslist for a small fee.

    Hopefully TC will be along shortly with that chain tool.... (the guy has to have one, right?)

    I have a nice MotionPro chain tool, if all else fails.

    I have a friend who might be able to get me one. But if he doesn't i can ride my ninja to pioneer and pick up you set(i will leave a collateral) one weekend and i can bring it back the next weekend on the vfr. I do not know if its the safe to ride the vfr with the chain too loose.

    What brand chain are you planning on getting. I'd stick with D.I.D. and EK, get an x-ring one if you can. With exceptional care you should be able to get 30k miles out of a chain set. I try to lube mine weekly and clean it with kerosene and a rag once a month. If I get really ambitious I use an old paint brush with the kerosene to get the chain good and clean, but it makes a mess.

    The D.I.D. x-ring is probably the best on the market. I've heard the maxima chain wax is pretty good stuff, I have motorex chain lube now cause its what my local shop carries and its ok. Doesn't fling too much but doesn't seem to last as long as I'd like.

    thanks Davis5g for replying. I just bout the stockton tool company chain tool kit from cyclegear for 45$ too. I expect to see the used more than a few times as i am always looking for fixer upper bikes for cheap.

    hey guys, so i have stumped on another problem. Well not a problem but i cant decide between the Shinko 005(Customer Product Reviews for Shinko 005 Advance Rear Tire) and the conti (Continental Conti Motion Sport Touring Radial Rear Tire - Street Bike - Motorcycle Superstore) for my rear tire. They are both the same price but from the reviews some people claim shinkos are unpredictable while cornering and some claim they handle great. about the contis some say they get decent tread life and others say very poor tread life.

    I have used the shinko 712 on my ninja250 and cb450sc just because it was cheap, but they turned out to be better than the stock dunlop on my ninja and felt great. On the cb450 they balance without taking any weight at all( i did check the rim balance before mounting and it needed less than .5oz to balance the rim by itself, so its not the way out of balance rim compensating for the tire.) On the ninja it took 1.5oz to balance which is not too bad.

    Anyone out there that has used either one of this tires for its whole treadlife or for atleast some time want to chime in. I did a quick search on the forum but did not find anything solid regarding these two tires. if this has been discussed before please pardon me for posting again. on the other hand there must be people who have accumulated more mileage on these since they last posted.

    From what I've been able to gather is there are certainly better tires out there than the Shinko's. However, for the price they are hard to beat. If your not riding the balls off the bike(looking for peg dragging grip) they should do just fine.

    Bringing back my first thread to update/review about the tires:

    I installed the BT-23 rear tire and the DID zvm2 chain with new sproclets @ 16700 miles on 11/2/2011.

    Today the bike hit 28,308 miles and the rear tire is almost done. So I got around 11,600 miles on that tire. I think I could go another 500 more miles on the tire. But I consider the tire done and won't be riding the bike in twisties before getting a new rear tire mounted. The bt-21 on the front that came with the bike was replaced with a new bt-23 on 6/20/2012 @ 23,900 miles.

    More than 60% of the miles have been on freeway on this bike after I got the 1994 vfr. I am happy with the performance of the bt-23 on the vfr and I think I will keep buying them.

    I have pr2' on the '94 vfr. I wore them out this week as well. The last miles on them were on Wednesday(4/24/13). I am replacing them with another set of pr2 this time around so I can compare the bt-23 and pr2 and decide on which tire for the future.

    My 1996 vfr is stock and the '94 has a penske rear shock and racetech stuff in the forks. So once I mount the tires and will try to swap the wheels and do a proper comparison of the two tires on the same bike.

    About the Chain: The DID chain on the 1996 has the same miles as the rear tire. I adjusted it one time shortly after installing it and I think I had to adjust the slack once more after 7k miles. So it hasn't stretched much at all. I lube it around 300 miles( I think over kill). I am very happy with that purchase as well.

    Overall I am glad that I followed the advise here and spent the money on quality parts at the time instead of going cheap as I was thinking.
