Front brakes were added and the displacement was lowered for novices at Ascot around 1960. A bunch of novices bought it in just a few weeks. The OHV bikes and the flatheads were ridgid framed, no brakes and no shifting out of top gear. On Any Sunday including footage that was at one time cutting room floor stuff and became OAS parts who knows how many now, will show what was being raced at the time. Also pix by Walt Mahoney. Lots of footage of daylight TT's from Ascot and DeAnza in Riverside, also running front and rear brakes. AMA made the change.. The irony was that there were more HD's on the track because some of the smaller bikes were, dare we say it? Italian..

    No brakes on Speedway rigs..

When somebody finally comes up with a cellphone with a 15" screen I may get one. The big "O" depending on her latest diet just doesn't fit on those tiny cells.

Thanks for that update on the rules.
I knew some 100lb. kids that could really fly on those 650 triumphs in a Trackmaster or Redline frame.

But the most points were given for a win in the 250 class.

I'd really be sold if it had a GPS built in too. Ever wonder why on many "regular" maps the compass rose or a symbol that points North is on them and on the electronic types ya never see one. I'd rather know where North is than the nearest Jo-jo stand or Harley dealer..

Those "rules' were AMA and at the time, AMA was pretty much in the pocket of HD. The displacement after the new rules took effect for Novices stayed the same for Amateurs and Experts both local and National. 500cc for pushrod and OHV engines and 750 cc for F heads. This was Class C racing. Lots of innovations on those bikes. One guy even stuffed a Manx into a factory GoldStar tracker frame. two plug heads on the singles, GP carbs with remote bowls, under the table Jerry Branch headwork on Triumphs and BSA's so the boys at HD wouldn't get all pushed out of shape..

(showing my ignorance here...) I thought I read somewhere that solid wheels or the clear plastic disks like that caused stability issues at higher speeds. Am I wrong?
