HI guys, I'm new to the site as a registered user. I've only been here befoe to read the threads. I'm interested in buying a 5th generation VFR. I rode my brother-in-law's 2000 last year and just fell in love with it. What production years are the best to target? I've been told to try to find a 2000 or 2001 model. Are the R/R issues on all 4 years of production? Any information would be apprectiated. Dan
Here is one on sale right now, http://vfrworld.com/forums/5th-generation-1998-2001/36213-sale-1998-vfr800f.html#post329519
Pretty much all gen's are subject to electrical issues, particularly if you don't keep up with checking/cleaning the connectors, esp. the 3 yellow wire one that runs from the stator to the R/R. Chassis ground(s) are also often neglected and cause problems. Check this site out for solutions to many of those issues: Wire My Bike You mite want a Y2K/'01 if you don't want the condom mirrors, but the '98/'99 do not have cats (tho they have mild steel headers). Visually all 4 years are nearly identical (except the yellow) but have subtle differences under the plastic. Can't go wrong with any of them. If I could, I'd get the '8/'9 for the cat-less exhaust and just buy a pair of Y2K mirrors to upgrade the look - otherwise just buy the nicest gen 5 you can find and ride it.
