I recently picked up a pretty rough '86 VF500F, 12K on the odometer, I will be salvaging it. Short list of items that I will be keeping:
    1. engine and carbs
    2. all control cables
    3. brake discs
    4. petcock
    5. throttle assy with switches

If anyone is interested in parts/spares, let me know what you want and I will reply with price & condition.

The bike has a pair of Supertrapps on it, PO didn't have the stock mufflers. The Trapps have a few scuffs and some small dents. I'll post pix if you are interested.

Not so good...dents and some rust inside. The area around the petcock mounting plate appears to be sound, no evidence of pinholes. If you are a good body man, it could probably be salvaged.

what the heck creaky? Did the PO just randomly take a hammer to the bike? Thanks for the pics but I think I'll pass.

Don't blame you a bit, they are pretty rough. From the looks of the bike, it has been down on both sides, appears that the bars got into the tank. I'm going to practice my bodywork ?skills? on both the mufflers and tank and see what happens.

I was thinking about the tank last night. I need to find out if my '85 tank and petcock will work OK with the '86 carbs with a gravity feed situation. I remember a discussion on this, but my memory is fuzzy. Can anyone bring me up to date on this? If the '85 tank will work, I'll sell the '86 tank, I'm thinking $75. I am in Lawrenceburg, IN.

I will be keeping the '86 engine to swap into my '85 over the winter.

There is a difference in the fuel lines. The '86 petcock has a larger nipple and the fuel lines T at the carburetors.

I believe the 'hot' setup is to install the larger 32mm bore carbs on the '86 engine but I have not read whether there are any fuel starvation issues running the smaller '84/'85 fuel petcock (fuel line) to the '86 carbs.

FYI, a few other differences on the '86. One of which is the radiator.

IIRC, the '86 has a larger radiator and larger coolant hoses.

I believe the '86 frame has different mounting tabs for the larger radiator.

The good news you can easily confirm as you now have the two models in the stable!

Was hoping that the '86 petcock could be adapted to the '85 tank....no way Hose-A. The mounting holes are spaced differently and are at different angles. Comparing the petcocks, the '86 has a 9mm fuel outlet opening, the '85 is 5mm, big difference. Since the '85 tank will be used, I think it would be a good idea to retain the fuel pump, at least until the pump takes a dump and I'll try gravity feed at that time. IC.....you're correct on the radiatior mounting tabs. The bottom tabs on the '85 place the bolt holes inside the frame tube on both sides, whereas the tabs on the '86 place the bolt holes at the frame tube centerline. It is difficult to measure the radiator tab spacing with the radiators installed, but best I can tell, the '86 bottom radiator tabs are spaced approx. 1 3/4" wider than the '85. The top tab appears to be in the same position on both frames. Once the engines are both out, I will get accurate measurements.

Thanks for prodding my memory IC, I rembered participating in that thread but was too lazy to look it up. Gonna put the tank back on the '85 and go over it in preparation for a leisurely evening ride.

Gotcha, I assumed you listed the things you wanted to sell, not things you wanted to keep.
