Usually when you get that "popping" under decel it cause of a lean condition where's your flat spot 6-7? When it start changing circuits I would recommend factory pro and billy carr to set it up for you.

What year does it say on the Frame?

The body looks like an 86...the lack of Fuel pump says 86....the seat is not an '86.

Frame says 85. Well it did until the plate got knocked off. The original red seat is a disaster of sunfade and ass-tear, but I have a spare coming that I will re-cover.

Ill have to drill down into the fuel pump mystery and see if a PO did some swapping. Any tell tales I can look for?

Judging from the VF500Fs that I have seen so far, the looks and description of your bike indicates to me that it is an '86. It is not unknown for people to switch VIN plates if there is a lost/unavailable title problem.

Vin plate checks against headstock. Need to decipher VIN perhaps -I don't recall where the year build date is but I don't see a 6 if that matters. Sticker on the rear fender says its a VF500FF, which checks with an '85?

You can confirm via the serial numbers or a simple visual inspection of the head (unless heads were swapped of course)

If working on the carburetors yourself, Mike Nixon offers a great tech manual:

    The Motorcycle Project Book Nook

Mike also offers full (plate off) rebuilds, if interested. His work is beyond top shelf.

If it is a 85 you have the good carbs "32mm" where the 86 has the 30mm. The 86's are visual noticeable IC has a great picture of the cam holders but also the lack of a fuel pump is another check to see if there were wires for a fuel pump there will only be a two wire plug check underneath the fuse cover to see if you spot a fuse marked fuel pump the fuses are located under the plastic cover by the key on the triples.

It's an 86 motor in an 85 frame! More mystery!

Will have to verify the correct carbs are on it for sure and need to poke around the wiring harness. Interesting!
