I know this forum is loaded with tech junkies so someone will know the answer to this question.

Ok guys who can tell me where I can get a super small stand alone vehicle locator system. It has to be independent from the vehicle electrical system and only turn on when pinged by a signal from the satellite. This unit must be small enough to hide on the vehicle so a skilled person can't find it.

Someone is bound to ask why so the reason I need this is to protect leased assets against theft. In the past clever fellas have located and removed the hard wired locators and screwed off never to be seen again so we need to up the game.

    Thanks!

How long are the leases? Anything independent of the vehicle's electrical means it is using battery power, and a battery can only last so long, that is why most are wired in some how. Could you just up the game of how well they are hidden?

As far as I know, and technology is always marching on, there isn't anything that can be pinged by a satellite. Usually the unit is reading satellite signals to determine location and then sending its information out.

It is possible that with more time and effort spent concealing the normal tracking equipment, things would be better. I've been searching for options and all I can find are the normal fleet management type trackers which are big and bulky (easy to find and disable). The leases can vary quite a bit in length so you need something that will more or less sleep till awakened. Perhaps it is a pipe dream but you never know till you ask right. I would like one for my bike too so size is important.

that is cool, technology marches forward!

Jeth - just curious, why not use Lojack, it is only the size of about a pack of gum, does need to be wired in though. It is amazing how much time and energy and money is spent trying to get people to do the right thing or just react to people to doing the wrong thing...

I looked at the Lojack and thought it was the answer but it is only in the States according to their website. We are in Canada and need a system that will cover all of North America if possible. It seems like this should be simple but finding the right system has proven to be a little tricky. On another forum, one of the members suggested that we should simply insure the beasts and make claims when and if they go missing but you just can't keep doing that as your rates will go sky high and the criminals walk free. So we are tring to do our due dilligence in stopping this activity.

I really appreciate everyone's input here especially since it isn't real VFR subject matter!!!

didn't even notice the Canada thing, I thought you guys had no crime up there! ;-)
me, I would rather nail the bastards then just keep collecting the insurance. Hence I install Lojak on the cars and bikes.

a lot of "tote the note", fly by night car dealerships tend to equip cars that they sell with remote disabling devices, in case their deadbeat buyers try to skip out on their car payment. you might consider visiting a few of those kinds of car dealerships and asking the owners about that kind of thing. you never know what kind of creative ideas you might run across.

Keep in mind that the tracking device in the link I posted has a SIM card in it which implies it receives a cellular signal to activate. This may be as issue if the bike is in an area with no signal. For the majority of people it should be adequate but if you live in an isolated area you are may be out of luck. I'd be curious to know about the device if you buy it so keep us posted.
