I picked up a 87 VFR700 last night for my girlfriend to get more comfortable with riding skills. She's been a rider for a while, but wanted her own hardware. I've secretly wanted a VFR since the late 80's and now i have one in my garage. :)

the bike has been sitting for 5 years. Tonight begins the 'rebuild'. Flushing all fluids, and pulling the carbs to service them. The tank is A+ clean, so i'm happy there. The last report is that the motor runs like a champ when he parked it. He had a kid, so the bike got parked (don't understand, but ok).

I look forward to hanging out and asking asinine questions, most of which have probably been asked a few dozen times before, so please be patient with me. :)

You had to be from Sacramento ??? Stock your fridges with brew, and sit back for the entertainment.........

You'll never need to touch your bike, but keep an eye on your wife and daughter !!

Wow! What a night. I unloaded the bike with the help of a neighbor and my girlfriend. I immediately started pulling the carbs. I pulled plugs while i was there. They are new, so that's a plus. One of the carbs wasn't in the boot (front right) so who knows how it ran last time.

All the pilots were plugged, and i cleaned copious amounts of crap out of the bowls. Everything buttoned up and it would crank but no fire. Checked for power at the fuel pump and it was getting power. Looks like the pump may be bad.

Should the pump be getting a full 12v? Mine isn't, so I’m not ready to rule out the pump yet (it was getting dusk, so wiring was not traceable.

I went old school (filled the float bowls with a squeeze bottle) and fired the bike. My neighbor kept the bowls full and we let it warm up. Runs good, temps all came up nice, idles at 1000 rpm after some adjustments. Revs nice.

Bad news...it doesn't appear to be charging. Battery voltage drops as you rev the motor and it never recovers. Is this common on these guys?

We are excited that it runs. Now to get it mechanically sound, then work on the body work.

The fuel pump relay only turns the fuel pump on when the engine is running, gets it's signal from the pulse generator to run so it is best to jump the pump directly to the battery to prime the system as you will crank on it until the cows come home before they fill. Just jump the blue/black wire at the pump and the pump will run, the green is a common ground at all times. Run the pump until it dies and it will fire right up. The charging system is an issue with all of these beasts, best to start with the three pin plug on the left side of the bike with the three yellow wires from the stator. It is going to be melted or cooked to be sure, the same is probably true of the starter relay plug. Clean up or repair and check charging system again.

Great info! It pumps, it charges. Still no clutch. Looks like the master is bad. I pulled the master apart and it's nothing stupid, so i'm looking for either a rebuild kit, or a replacment master...

I flushed all the brakes. Changed the oil.

no turnsignals. All the fuses are good. have to research this one...

Also, i need the rear plastic (under rear of seat and around brake light). I'll post a WTB ad for that one.

    Thank you guys!
