    Hi,

has anyone experienced difficulty removing the screw from under the mirror that hold's up the windshield? it appears that the threads that hold the screw are stripped and i absolutely cannot get the screw out, I have also stripped the screw-head. I think it might be some kind of plastic/rubber nut holding the screw in.

    thanks,

    Lee

Um...... Just sayin' but the year and/or model of the bike in question in these types of posts is generally very handy information to have in order to lend you a hand with your problem Lee.

Got a pic? Sounds like you stripped out a well-nut.

Do you have good unobstructed access to the head of the stripped out screw and to the back of the well-nut?

    Hi Lee

It would be really helpful if you let us know which year/version VFR you have, or possibly post up pictures of the offending screw? Then hopefully people with similar models can offer specific advice.

I don't have unobstructed access to the back of the well nut. I do have it to the top of the two screws. One is underneath the mirror on the clutch side of the handlebars, the other is on the front brake side inside the windshield. see photos that i will be posting.

    thanks,

    Lee

Ok here are some photos of the screws. One is underneath the mirror on the left side (clutch handle bar side) on the outside. One is of the screw holding a plastic piece behind the mirror on the inside of the windshield (front brake handlebar side) Basically the screws turn but don't turn out of the threads. They just turn and stay in the same position. I think the well nut is causing the problem. Also, i tried a screw extractor and stripped the screws even more. These are absolutely the cheapest and worst fasteners i have dealt with before.

Sorry I don't have a 98, so I can only give some general advice - albeit based on a similar problem removing the screen on my old Suzuki GS to fit a double bubble screen.

From the photos and your comments, it seems that you have encountered a similar problem - namely the screw thread has seized/rusted and turning the screw head simply rotates the well nut it is fastened too. Obviously to separate the components, something is going to have to be "sacrificed". As the screw/well nuts are the cheapest component then your best bet is to try and carefully drill the head off the screws.

The best tool for this is a really sharp brand new drill mounted into the flexible shaft of a Dremel running at max speed. The flex shaft is brilliant for getting into awkward spaces. (Using top speed ensures the drill is moving so fast that it will cut through the screw head rather than start to rotate it and the well nut.) Cover the surrounding area with an old sheet or cloth to stop everything getting covered in metal shavings. Take your time and slowly cut away the screw head, once it separates you should be able to separate the components. Try not to push the captured well nut inside, as it may be a real pain trying to remove it and fit a replacement.

Hope that helps and Good Luck
