Group had a ride to protest helmet laws where they made a valid point, just not the one intended...

    Da CLIK!

well, I dont like that gov't is always trying to tell us all the things we can't do, but then again, I don't want to pay a higher insurance premium b/c some knucklehead wasn't wearing his helmet when he crashed and had half of his brains spill out onto the road, survives, and receives a settlement from those of us who make the effort to protect ourselves.

This happened yesterday just down the road from where I live. They had it all over the news and they interviewed some members afterwards and they were still defending their beliefs even after one of their own dies because of the protest. I guess some people will never learn. I understand that some people don't want government telling them what to do, but wearing a helmet on a motorcycle is your only true chance of survival in the event of a crash. It's common sense to wear one. I guess I should clarify that is is just my two cents.

You have a valid point and I truly believe riding without a helmet is stupid beyond reason but it is the rider's choice to make, not some power hungry paper pusher's.

this isnt necessarily true. recently someone I know crashed(the ONE time he wasnt wearing a helmet) and nearly died. from what his doctors say, he WOULD be dead had he been wearing a helmet. one of those strange circumstances crashes where JUST the right landing did some cranial damage, but a helmet would have snapped his neck and killed him as I'm understanding.

its not a guarantee, however given the suck factor of crashing without one is insanely high, I'll wear my lid and enjoy the relative quiet.

but this should be common sense, not somehing the govt says "you have to do or you'll get a ticket or um, or, or something."

I respectfully disagree, I allmost never wear seatbelts and allmost allways wear my helmet (and gloves and jacket). I will force the girl on the back of my bike to wear full gear at all times wether or not I am but would not make her wear a seatbelt in my car. I also hate riding with anything less than a full face helmet, more for my own comfort and vision than protection but I also won't wear a modular because it kinda defeats the purpose, depending on the maker. Then again, maybe I'm just a big fat retard, who knows!!!

Gotta disagree with the seat belt but still it's your call to make, not mine or anybody else's, just don't be looking for anyone else to pay your medical bills if there's a accident. Do agree with full face helmets thought protection is on a par with comfort for me. I would love a modular but problem is, no one makes 'em with the same protective level up front as a Shoei RF1000 (no EPS layer in the chin bar)...

I think that wearing a helmet (like wearing a seat belt) will most likely increase your chances of survival. Sometimes those two things will kill you. Overall I think it's a good idea.

However, I feel it is not the government's place to protect me from myself and neither of these should be laws.

I always wear my helmet. I always wear my riding gear. I always buckle my seat belt. I always make sure that everyone in the car I am driving buckles their seat belt too or the car doesn't move (assuming I am driving).

    Motorcycles:
#1 cause of death is head trauma
#2 cause of death is staph infection (the result of skin damage from road rash, etc)

    Cars:
People in the back that are unrestrained often injure/kill people in the front.

Helmets and seatbelts are for wusses. I know some dudes the know some dudes who know some lawyers that can get any tickets you get for not wearing either down to a parking ticket. If you get killed I can't help you.

Helmets are important. Girls will smile at you because they have no way of knowing just how old, how bald, and how ugly you are. Of course, it all ends when the helmet comes off.

I could care less if someone else wants to wear a helmet or not - except for one small hitch: While I have no proof to substantiate this, I would suspect that many of the non-helmet wearing people are also underinsured, or not insured at all. Being that I pay taxes and huge insurance premiums (NJ is probably the most expensive in the country), the fact that some idiot decides not to wear a helmet and has a severe injury, part of my taxes/insurance premium are going to pay for his hospital stay.

NJ does have a helmet law, so while the argument could be made that my premiums aren't going towards underinsured motorists, that would only be true if my insurance carrier only wrote in NJ.

I know that here in NJ - and once again assume other states - an Emergency room can't deny someone coverage to "save their life", regardless of the cost associated.

So while I don't appreciate the gov'ment telling me what to do either, there are some things that I don't mind their involvement with. Helmets happen to be one of them.

Some general poop on insurance. Several states do not require same but mandate financial responsibility.

Motorcycle rates have actually come down. Not long ago the industry's view on bike riders in general was that everyone who rode probably including Malcom Forbes, was a known member of HAMC and a hamster abuser.

I use a broker in Texas and on my 91 that even though in great shape is not worth that much and having a very clean record (save 8,000 parking tickets..;) I pay about $100.00/a year.

The anti-helmet doods are from ABATE. Sponsored and funded by Richard Lester, esq. Very powerful and well organized thier cry is that Big Brother is taking away thier freedoms so when they ding thier frontal lobes and are sucking thier soup through a straw, Lester and crew are raking 30-40% off the top so they can be "LAWYERS THAT RIDE" and other shit..

    BTW, don't you sell insurance?

Your memory serves you well, BB. In a nutshell, yes I do. Although its a bit different than your every day general agent placing home, auto, life, etc. I actually use an agent to place said coverage. It give me somebody to sue in case its fucked up  in the event of a loss.

Personally, I think my insurance - whether its cars, boat, bike, homeowners - is pretty cheap. But when I look at my auto policy, specifically the premium for under or non insured, its pretty pricey all things considered.

This is like discussing religion. Well here goes anyways.

For those of you who don't wear seat belts. I take it your not much of a driver then. Because if something simple even happens like going off the side of the road. How are you going to control the car while you are bouncing or sliding around in your seat? Or even the passenger floor? Ain't no steeren wheel down thar.
As far as helmet laws..... yea it's your choice. But what about the little hottie that want to be cool and ride on the back of a bike? Who knows nothing about safety and riding. Just looking sexy and cool on the back of a bike. The rider gooses it, she falls off, head hits pavement, next stop ICU or morgue. Or somebody's 12-14 year old kid, gf or wife?

I think anybody who doesn't use both is very foolish. Yes, a helmet saved me once.

2 old friends some years ago, drove off a road into a ditch in Corpus Christi, Tx. The one wearing the seat belt survived, the other did not wear his and died of a broken neck.
my previous post was meant to indicate the equivalent basic safety measure one should/would take whether riding a bike or driving a car.
i wear a seat belt b/c it's safe, same reason for the helmet. also, no seat belt = a hefty traffic ticket.

Deadsmiley - you're absolutely right about the staph infection statistic. Staph bacteria attacks the weakest part(s) of your body, so if you're a dummy, then your brain will become infected. In all seriousness, staph is NO JOKE.
