She went in the shop to get the new tires mounted and balanced, a new battery, and to check on the carbs. Thats it. I got a Voicemail today from my guy saying very bluntly "call me, we need to talk about your bike." Not good. :frown: Apparently before they dug into it too much, they ran some compression tests and its not good. They decided to stop and not tear it apart before they asked me but he suspects that some rings aren't seated, or it ate something. He doesn't think it threw something because it has never made any suspect noises. But they noticed some rust on the heads which lead him to believe the engine may have sat without carbs for a period of time. Both him, who is the service manager, and their top technician both told me it was done. They would have to dig deeper to even find the problem and it would get real expensive, and generally its just not worth it anymore. I am going into the shop tomorrow to talk in person.

The bike is now up for sale for someone who thinks they can fix it. Or if I don't sell it as a whole I may part it out in a few months to all the amazing people here who need parts.

Besides, i've been tossing around buying an SV650 trackbike anyway.

Asking $800 for the whole thing. :pout:

Buy the SV650 ..............maybe the VFR will survive as parts elsewhere.

once they've got low compression, repairs arent worth it, unless you're mechanically skilled and have the downtime to do the work. then parts are the difficult part.

its time to do one of three things. one, sell it and buy what you want, two, buy another engine with good compression, or three, waste a ****load of money fixing the current motor. it could be a valve clearance issue too though. if its all 4, have them check valve clearances, sometimes that'll cause it if they're radically out of spec. had it happen on my 900 Custom once.

Ah, man, don't tempt me like that! If you do part it out, I would be interested in a few things, such as the engine for parts, and some cosmetic items. Hit me up here or at Ohioriders.net if it gets to that, unless I come up with the $$$ for the whole things first. or it sells to someone else.

I'll be next in line behind JPorter

I could use a few parts myself (frame & title also)

No, not super mechanically skilled. And I'm working full time and in the middle of my last full time semester in school. So not alot of free time either.

My other forum is giving me shit because the mechanic told me that parts were scarse. My bike has 3600 on the clock, so I doubt it would be valves. I think either way (putting a new motor in, or fixing it) I'm going to be spending a shit ton of money on a bike that is my only bike. It's been nothing but problems for a year and a half. Time for it to go. Someone else can fidget with it, and I can try something else.

Tempt tempt tempt....... you know you want it. And you're only 45 minutes away....

I thought the carbs just needed straightened out. It was running "rough". Apparently it was the engine....

Oh right. I'm not much of a mechanic but that sounds like valve/s, it'll run but not very well. My suggestion was just gonna be to not spend any more money on it and just ride it till it stops. Good luck and sorry to hear that, it always sucks when something turns out worse than you thought.

You can do a leak down test to determine if it is the rings or the valves. You might want to do that before you can the bike.

I'm having some trouble getting my mind around this.

IIRC, the bike was in fine running condition when purchased from the second owner. With such low mileage (only 3,600 miles) I don't see how this engine is a lost cause.

Of course, the shop you took it to could be correct in their diagnosis but I'd get a second opinion before sending this one to the boneyard.

When I purchased it, it was running, but having trouble idling. (Basically it wanted to die on idle). I found a missing vaccum port screw and inserted a new one. I rode it for 3 weeks and it left me stranded. Took the carbs in and it was 2 stuck float valves and some clogged jets. Got it back and rode it 1 mile, wouldn't rev up, and was super herky jerky. Figured it was carb sync problems. Thats when the battery croaked on me. Sent it in, and now this. Thats the whole thing....

If I could ask, who rebuilt the carburetors?

I know you had some difficulty with the installation of them, were you able to get this dialed in?

Also, If I could ask, what were the compression numbers and how was the test performed?

Valve clearances that have tightened up can cause low compression numbers too... and tight valves don't make noise letting you know something's up.

IC, the same group that cleaned and rebuilt the carbs did the testing. Long story short, but I didnt make it into the shop to see the bike in person today. The transmission in my Taurus just bit the dust today. I think I may have lost the first two gears. And as I look out the window as I type this, I can see a huge puddle of trans fluid under the car.

    NOT a fucking good week.....
