If you had the choice to travel to Montana, Wyoming, Colorado or South Dakota for a Iron Butt ride, which would you choose? I haven't been to any of these states, but I'd like to see the best of one of these states.

    I'm traveling from Portland Oregon.

    Cheers!

My vote goes to Colorado. I did the Colorado 500 with my pops and Grandpa back in '95 on a mid 80's Honda XR350. If I remember right, it took about 16 hours. I understand that street riding is night/day difference from offroad/dualsport riding. Regardless, the scenery in Colorado is just outstanding in Spring.

I also vote for Colorado. My father and uncle went out that way last year and some of the pictures they brought back were really breath-taking, I can't imagine what it must look like in person. I'm still kicking myself for passing up the chance to go.

Sounds good! Thanks for the response!

What part of Colorado would you recommended?

Swing down to CO and us locals would be more than happy to get you into the good stuff. Whatever your taste - scenic, sporty, roads that are 14k feet in elevation, etc., we love showing out-of-towners a good trip.

    Thanks dude!

I'll let you know if i head that way. To many trips, to little time and to little money.

But the Iron Butt ride sounds like a challenge.

Havcar-Keep in mind that non-FI bikes from near sea-level won't appreciate the roads above 14k without getting jetted for altitude. But there is so much to appreciate here in terms of riding. Come see Colorado!

    too, to, two

Carbed bikes will make it over the 14ers just fine, especially 700cc or larger. They'll just be a little more gutless than if jetted properly. You're not riding at 14 for more than a few minutes so it isn't like you have an opportunity to foul a plug.

I'd do all three. Swing through Montana, Wyoming, and CO!

    1000 miles in colorado

If you are trying to do 1000 miles in one day in Colorado I think that would be very difficult, especially if you want to stick to the roads that are fun to ride with great scenery. I did a 1000 mile ride last August all over Colorado and it was great! We took 3 days to do it however. Could have easily done it in 2 but one day would have been impossible unless we were going to ride in the dark.

About 90% of our ride was on single lane twisty mountain roads.

You can see the route we took at
    3 - Google Maps

We took the lower route on the first two loops the first day and stopped at Montrose.
Then did the bottom loop on day 2 and back to Montrose.
Did the upper part of the other two loops on the third day.
    It was an awesome trip.
We had so much fun that we planned an 11 day trip this year which we just completed 2 weeks ago.

Now i'm working on my next trip. So many places... so little time...

i agree that your own private IronButt would be difficult here, not to mention a kind of waste. You can superslab it to get here but go for quality over quantity once you're here.

From Oregon, it would be a pretty scenic route to buzz across Idaho and pickup the lower part of Montana. Then drop down across Wyoming into Colorado for a couple day ride. Then go back across Utah and Nevada home. If you're planning on pitching a tent then it's really just a little bit more gas.

    as example, here's 2900mile round trip. At 40mpg that's 73 gallons. And at $4/gallon, that's $290.

Planning the Colorado trip! I hope it's not to hot.

I hope to take off ten days and head to Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. Got a low budget so I hope the camping is great along the way.

To many places to see to little time. : )

    Thanks for the recommendations!

My .02. Keep in mind I am from Virginia, so SD is a little closer...that being said, I love riding in SD. The Black Hills have quite a bit to offer. Custer Park, Needles Highway, the Pigtail Bridges, Badlands Park, not too far from Devils Tower, WY. If you stay out of the wildlife loop, there is still a day+ of exploring. I travel to and stay on the Rosebud Reservation in September every year. This year I hope to travel as far as Denver before turning back NE to the Res. Happy traveling.

I have friends who live on Rosebud and I have been there so much that it seems like a second home to me. At first, I was kind of creeped out and guess i just learned to accept some of the stuff I saw. Rode though Pine Ridge and that was creepy. Now back to the subject on hand.

No, Rosebud and Pine Ridge are Sioux Indian reservations. Rosebud are Lakota and I forget what Pine Ridge are. These reservations, being out in the middle of nowhere are desolate and can be places of great despair and hopelessness. Poverty is widespread and it is like entering a third word country in a matter of speaking. As far as being shady, in many ways I feel safer on the Reservation than in some of inner city neighborhoods around here.

ADD>>>Because the area is so isolated and the FBI tends not to interfere with Tribal law, meth labs are very common on the Res. because they can largely go undetected. I was around one year when one exploded. I guess that is what I meant when I said I learned to accept some of the things I saw.
