I was just wondering, in the muscle car world, a lot of folks have converted from carbs to EFI... has anyone tried transplanting/adapting the newer 800FI stuff to an older VF?

Interesting...shouldn't be too hard, high pressure pump, new lines, 800s have ITBs?

lots more hassle than its worth. FI usually utilizes larger throttle bodies on bikes than the carbureted counterparts, requires a new wire harness, and the gauges, ECU, essentially a complete rewire. by the time you're done rewiring, retrofitting, tuning and dynoing to get it smooth and dependable, you could have just bought a fuel injected bike instead and had months less headache.

Yea you are but there are several of us here that have had a hand in FI for the VF's but there is no way you can run a newer VFR throttle bodies as you found out way to big! Its possible just going to take alot of money.

To do all that work designing and building and most likely have the same hp/performance. Might work better when cold and easier to change fuel curve. I doubt you will get it any better than a good set of carbs setup properly. Of coarse the operative word is properly. That's not to mention the cost $$$.

It would be a fun project if money and time is not a problem.

This topic seems to come up about every 3 months or so.

I have not read any thread where anyone has done this successfully. I agree with what said earlier, if money had any consideration, you could buy an FI bike for what it would take to do it right. Sell your carbed bike and pony up a couple hundred extra $$ to buy a 5th gen.

Disagree - partly. I just rode cross country on my 3rd gen. It runs like a fine Swiss watch at 5000ft where I live and have it tuned "properly". Get down to 900ft in WI and MN where the idle lopes and there's an irritating high freq vibration/harmonic in the engine from being too lean.

    Agree fully with this though!

There is a company here in buford georgia (HFD1motorsports.com) I spoke with a rep few years back they race a RFV. Dude saw my 500 and we got to talking about pipe dreams one of them was FI for it and the he replied our company is developing a kit for are 400 if you could bring your bike to us we could prototype a kit for you well few things got in the way of making this happen but go to the web site and give them a call couldn't hurt.

well for fun, I did a search of fleabay for parts. Assuming it would be easiest to use a later gen of honda VFR parts (I used 5th gen) and a guy doesn't have a parts bike laying around....

Throttle body assembly - several available for $70. The manifold V angle doesn't match the carb'd bikes so fabrication would have to be done. Don't know about spacing.

MAP sensor - several available for $80

Universal fuel pump with regulator - $60

Pair of O2 sensors - several used gamblers available for $30 (who buys used O2 sensors?)

    ECU - $150

Wire harness with appropriate connectors for above sensors - $70

So assuming a guy had the tools and means for the fabrication required, no doubt some wiring modifications to adapt old components to the new ECU, the throttle body casting space between cylinders matched up, the mod would run around $500 in parts (give or take a few bucks with shipping).

That's before you drop a couple hundred in dyno tuning as someone mentioned previously.
