I have a 1999 vfr 800 that I just bought. I am new to the vfr and love it so far.
My question is in regards to the radiator fan - what temperature does it kick on at? I had my bike up to 230 the other day and the fan still wasn’t on. Is this normal, or something I should look into?

Between 104 and 106 Cels. If that little black bar under the temp reading turns red, you got problems.

My fan switch/sensor went bad last year. Grab a manual, boil some water, hook up your volt meter to the switch and see what happens.

VFRs run really hot anyways. Don't sweat it.

First, inspect the fan/shroud assembly and make sure you didn't get a rock or twig in there that stopped the fan. (Sounds funny, I know, but you'd be surprised how often this is the case...) Then try checking your fuses and ensure one isn't blown... THEN check your sensor.

okay, is the sensor located above the headlights next to the turn signal relay?

the sensor is located in the top of the left radiator. Mine came on at 231 degrees. I don't care what anyone says about how hot these bikes are supposed to run, that's too damn hot. At that point the temp would continue to rise, too little too late.
I installed a small switch bought from Radioshack that retains the stock sensor just in case I forget to turn it on. Interesting, now the switch is installed when turned off the fan kicks on by itself at 219 and doesnt shut off until 206 - not sure why since my ground is switched. Those are much more reasonable numbers, and the engine never goes beyond the low 220's now.

I agree ,check the sensor and also check to see if the fan motor is seized. Yea, someone finally agrees with me, yes VFR's run hot, but thats no reason to let your motor cook and 230 F,in my book , is cooking. I did the same as one of the previous guys did and re- wired around the sensor, now I can start the fan whenever I want. My bike rarely runs over 205 f and I have encountered some pretty big traffic jams with it. eddie

The problem is the side-mounted radiators- the air doesnt hit them head on like inline 4 engines. The upside is hot air doesnt cook the rider however...

my 06 fan comes on at 220 F. cuts off at 210 F
but in traffic bike runs 230 F which I think is too hot
but what can you do? two side mounted radiators one fan?
    what were they thinking?
I will say that since the pipes, & air cleaner, bike runs cooler

Hey D; I dont think the bike would run cooler due to the pipe and air cleaner
being changed. I would think the bike runs cooler because of your custom map.In essence, the bike runs cooler because the PC3 is allowing the engine to get more fuel which allows the combustion chambers to run at lower temperatures. Therefore reducing the strain on the cooling system.Anyhow I think thats the way it works! eddie

Mine comes on at 220 and stays on until I get some wind pushing across the sides.I get it to cool down quicker by running it in higher gear in low speed traffic.

230 is too high. Like many others, mine comes on at 220. Good luck!

My 08 Fan comes on at 104-105C when in traffic and kicks back off at 99C, but soon again reaches turn on temp, I think I will do the manual switch.

Also wanted too mention I am brand new to the 'New Interceptor' performance and so far am enjoying this forum.

    Cheers
