I have a chance to pick up a gen 3, 41K miles. Runs good, new tires. Fairing rough and/or missing, tank good. I think I could get it for $500.

I am back and forth on it. I'm not an expert on Gen 3 at all (have had Gen 1,2,4), but it seems like the 3 is a bit of an orphan, not old enough to be collectible, not new enough to be worth much.

    What's a clean Gen 3 worth, 2-2500?

if it runs well, with a clear title, I'd say its worth it. $500 you can easily part most any older bike out and recover that if the engine itself runs well and the frame has a clean title and no damage.

Oh I agree its a no brainer for a part out. I think you'd double your money no sweat, but I really was thinking fix it up, ride a bit, and sell it without hopefully losing anything (labor aside). I've parted out a few things lately and I'm tired of that right now!

depending on local market, you're talking about $2000-$2200 in mint condition.

plastics will be the hardest parts to come by or repair.

I paid $500 for mine and had to locate a motor and repair the plastics. I had $1600 into it (all told including purchase) by the time it was road and photo worthy.

It's virtually the same animal as the 4th gen with different front plastics and a little heavier.

SO A MINT 1993 WITH 22,000 MILES ON IT WITH CORBIN SEAT AND FACTORY SEAT AND COWL, is only worth 2200 bucks? Just sold my 1986 with 34,000 miles on her, with corbin 2 up seat and after market exhaust and factory exhaust, more than what you say a 1993 is worth!

Labors of love on this website never cease to amaze me. Worth it? C'mon, we've all paid 500 bucks for dinner if it was a party with friends and a bar tab. If youre lookin to make money on old VFRs youre probably not going to be happy, no surprise there. The REAL question is: do I like old VFRs enough to spend lots of effort and possibly real money on making this bike return to the realm of roadworthy, fun, comment inducing bikes.

You and only you can answer that.

As a post script, I wil add , Ive been here long enough on this site, if I came across something like what you describe, which BTW I dont go looking for, but if I did, I would buy it and give the parts up to people on here at prices just enough to recoup my costs just for the goodwill and contacts I would make.

    But thats just me hahahahhaa

There are several 'value standards' for used vehicles, but they aren't really meaningful if it's a private party selling to a private party. Enough about that...

If you want a project, the title is solid, and the engine runs with no loud noises, then $500 is a fine price. If you don't want a project (including a part-out project) it isn't worth it at any price.

    My $.02 :)

Was it a white one in Sioux Falls? Its still listed for sale.

If so, good for you! I had decided to pass for now as I still have a Gen 1 to finish and I'm just not ready for another project. I did three major project bikes in the last 5 months and I need a break for summer. Come fall though and I'm looking again.

I disagree. A mint condition 3rd Gen with the right upgrades can easily fetch $3500. My 3rd Gen has less than 11k on it and I wouldn't even sell it for that with all the upgrades it has!!

A "fair" condtion 3rd Gen in my opinion is between $2000 and $2500 and A "poor" conditioned 3rd Gen that requires extensive bodywork or engine work would be worth $1000 or so.

I got 76,000 on my 91/I would try to get it for $400.00/if not I would buy it as a parts bike and possibly get it going as cheap as possible/I have room though-if your tight on space you might think twice.
My Arai brain bucket cost $600.00/Held galaxy gloves cost $200.00. Sheet am I a spend thrift? Nah F em aLL

There is a saying the car biz - goes like this, "there is an ass for every seat." if your gona fix it and flip it you go in with a different mind set than if your gona keep dah turd. My bike is probably worth more in parts when you start dismantling it/Fox shock, Race tech gold valves and fork springs, new Honda parts, R/R, stator, etc...

Hank yes it was in sioux falls. The guy was hard to talk to. He kept to himself, it was a weird transaction.
I ended up paying him 600 but he threw in a really nice helmit so I was ok with it. I tried all the tricks to get him
to go down on his price, but he really didnt want to sell. The bike rides awesome, I'll use it as a night rider until I
    can get the fairings. ha.

Yep that's the one! Well, glad someone got it, and I'm kind of kicking myself for not grabbing it. Definitely a good deal. There will be more... I suppose.

I talked to the guy a few times, and I noticed the same thing. I asked how many miles were on it. "I think 50 or 60K.. well let me look.. oh 41K". Then I asked if the tank had any damage. "HMMMM I don't think so.. let me look". Then I asked how long he'd had it. "Three years". LOL.. that didn't quite add up to me, but oh well. As long is it has a matching title, right?

Post some better pics when you get some!

Yeah I made sure the title was legit, The title was issued to him in 09. He wouldn't lower the price because he said someone was coming to look at it in the morning. I will post more pics later today or tomorrow.

You got a great deal! The swingarm and rear wheel alone are worth close to $600.
