... not the bike, his wrist!

Well, the scaphoid bone in his left wrist, to be exact. This is what happens when you try to impress your girlfriend at the gym by showing her how well (or not) you can kickbox on a full-sized hanging bag. It happened back on April 4th, I had just finished a whopper of a kick with my right, followed with a reverse spin and as the bag was coming back I attempted a wide left hook. The snap kind of concerned me a bit, but the pain was more along the lines of a sprain or a jam so I didn't think I actually broke it.

Went out on the job the next day, driving an 18 wheeler to Paradise, Ca and back down... loading and unloading on the way (in much pain mind you and with lots of help), and then another trip last week up to Boise, ID and back down. When I got back I realized that this "sprain" wasn't getting better, and so my girlfriend escorted me down to Urgent Care where they did some x-rays and determined that I had in fact broken my wrist... and then drove 4k miles, loaded and unloaded nearly 25k lbs and effectively re-broke my wrist at least a dozen times.

Seems every time I would sleep, it would begin to heal - and then I'd start working and it'd destroy whatever healing began... so today it pretty much looks like it did 4 weeks ago! Nice!

The crappy thing is that I have to see a specialist tomorrow afternoon to have it set properly (the Dr at Urgent Care wouldn't touch it) and if it doesn't need surgery, then I'll have to wear a cast for the next 12 weeks!

I wasn't really too bummed about that until I realized two very important things....

    1) I won't be able to ride my VFR till about mid-August

    2) I won't be able to get into a mechanics position until AFTER I have my cast removed!!!!!

    That sucks ass!!!!!!

Soon it will be too hot for riding anyway. I hope you heal up completely and quickly.

Take care of that hand. When you are old it will treat you better.

Thanks, everyone. Hopin it heals quickly, myself. I have a Dr appt to see a podiatrist this afternoon to check and see if it needs a pin or just to be set and cast. Having to drop $500 up front just to get in cause I haven't had insurance since I started @ MMI last year (not offered where I work & I can't afford self insurance rates). Hopefully it's just a quick and easy set and cast and on my way.

I can not stress to you though how disappointed I am that I can't ride for so long. I went and bought an IRC rear for the bike and only got to scuff it up around the neighborhood for not even a mile. Was planning on a big ride to the mountains, maybe even an overnight camping deal now that I have a set of bags on her. Had the carbs tuned and sync'd, new plugs, fresh oil, cleaned, oiled & adjusted the chain, lubed the entire rear axle assembly when I put the IRC on it, bled the front brakes, and even got a suction tank mount for my camera so I could document the ride! Went and spent good money on EBay for a blue & white Joe Rocket UFO 2.0 mesh jacket, matching white & black gloves (not pictured), and a red & white GMax GS68s helmet so that I'd be all matching the RWB on the bike for once... and now I'm grounded. THIS SUCKS!

    I ride motorcycles...
Hopefully you don't have to get the pins...
They hurt like a son-of-a-bitch, and for the first week after they take them out, you'll have this constant stabbing pain as if someone were trying to put the pins back in. I was in a cast ( 5 casts to be exact ) from Feb. 27th through May 2nd. Two reconstructive surgeries and one for hardware removal. Too bad about the No Insurance thing, I'm creeping up on 10g's WITH insurance. Good Luck.

    *UPDATE*

So far, the cast seems to be doing it's thing. No surgery, as I couldn't get them down into my price range as far as funding I was able to scrounge up from family... but they did help me get into the cast rather than wearing the brace that apparently wasn't helping me any. $230 to have a cast put on was SO much better than th $7k for the surgery - even if I do only have a 60% chance of full recovery (according to them).

It doesn't hurt normally, but if I get ballsy and try to pick things up that I know I shouldn't then I feel it. It's been 5 weeks now and I've got another 7 weeks to go. I'm going to see about getting a replacement cast after the 5th if my check is big enough (haven't been working much lately) as this one is getting pretty dirty and foul smelling. Last check wasn't enough after child support and taxes, but my babies always come first.
