I have an 06 6th gen. Recently installed a center fork ram mount for my gps and ran:

Amazon.com: CLA-NHWC: Universal Hardwire Cable with Lighter Socket and Power Switch for M...: Electronics

from my battery up through the frame to the dashboard. I am having a hell of a time finding a good spot to fasten the cigarette lighter end to. Any suggestions from folks who have done something similar? The trick is trying to find somwhere where the lighter with the gps male end plugged in does not interfere with steering or the forks, and I am having no luck. One thing I have thought about is putting it in the NE indent of the key ingnition but there isn't anything to fasten it to there.

    Thanks in advance,
    Byrds

For a few bucks more, I would just go with the Powerlet outlet. The installation plan is all taken care of for you, the socket has a cover when not in use, and the quality is excellent.

i just soldered up one today for that exact thing, trying to work out where to put it, was thinking of either making up a bracket to put somewhere upfront or just zip tie and duck taping it next to teh ignition

I found this to be a good location, This is the Centech AP-2 panel, 30A fuse holder, relay kit, safety diode, and wiring harness from Eastern Beaver. Relay is switched off the tailight wire with a posi-tap connector. I took the measurements and Jim Davis of Eastern Beaver built a custom setup. It makes the accessory wires a lot shorter and cleaner than running all the way from the back of the machine. You can see a powerlet in the first picture mounted on the same panel...wires to connect are about 8" long.
