So i have been cleaning my new to me 91 and went through today and cleaned all electrical connections with fast drying electrical connection cleaner stuff and put di-electric grease on all connections and also put a computer fan on the R/R <---question about that below, and now it won't start. I went to start it after i was done to make sure it all still worked and it started and ran for a few seconds then died. Then wouldn't start again, then the battery must have died. Did i use too much dielectric grease?? I didn't use much to begin with. what else could it be? It was a little clolder today?

Question, Is this a stock R/R? I cant imagine it is since she has 42xxx miles on her, but would like to know for sure. The second picture is after i put the fan on.

Recheck all connections. Make sure the female connectors are tight enough....making good contact with the mating male. If the connectors are in good shape then amount of grease should be fine. Have battery tested..... Replace if needed. Buy battery tender. No, that is not the original R/R. Good job on the fan mount, who knows, it may help. Have one on mine as well.

You need a fully charged battery, and if you don't see at least 12.5 volts on your voltmeter you just might need a new battery.

Thanks for the quick reply, Last night I checked all connections and cleaned some of the grease off, some connections had more than I thought on them. I'm gonna jump the battery after work and see if she starts. She ran perfect before I cleaned her.

Well jumped the bike, got her to start, kept her running and took her for a quick ride and she ran great like before this problem. When I got back I checked the battery, 13.76 at idle. But when I gave it throttle at about 4500 rpm I only had about 11.45 with my volt meter?? Shouldn't it go up when reving? Also this could just be a loose wire but while the bike was idling I noticed one of my rear running lights would go on, then off and so forth in no type of rhythm or anything? Could this still be a bad battery?

Sorry, but that sounds like you need to now do the standard tests on your stator cuz voltage should go up with increasing revs.

Try this flowchart to diagnose. It might be ok but follow the instructions and test each component.

Well thanks to all of you i figured it out. The flowchart REALLY helped, thanks vfrcapn. Got a new battery (Everlast) and put it in, took her for a ride around town. When i got home I ran the tests with the volt meter and this is what I got, Idle - 14.15, 2500RPM - 13.72, 5000RPM - 13.36, bike off - 13.66, and load test ( killswitch off and hitting start button) - 13.50. Thanks again for all the help!
