ok bike starts, runs, idles. now for this clicking noise.

i have taken the valve cover off the front. and when i turn the motor over by hand. i can see the upper (closer to carbs) cam gear sections unclock(i guess this is what ill call it)them selves then snap back to being in sync. when this happens it clicks loudly. i looked at the valves and they look to be moving smoothly and no sticking. cams are fine, and no scoring or pitting.

i have the right side cover off. everything look fine down there.

    any ideas.
i have looked at similar threads and still have no ideas. yet. the inside of the motor is clean, minimal amount of residue . the p.o. always had it serviced. but parked it when this started happening.
it has fresh oil. filter, plugs.etc.
its not the starter gear. it is currently off as it removed it while turning the motor over by hand.

the cam gear has springs in it. if one of these snapped would that cause the problem. i cant pin point the sound by myself.

    many thanks

That almost sounds like the clearances are off on the valves. I'd check valve clearance first.

update. i took the cams out last night. and i still have the noise. so it not the valves im begining to think its a rod bearing.
not really into rebuilding another motor at this moment.
might have to be a parts bike. hate to do it, but its just going to sit here for 6 months before i can touch it.

Spun rod bearing is going to give you alot of noise. If its more of a slight tapping noise more likely related to valvetrain issue. maybe a rocker arm loose or somthing?, not sure what type of bike your working on. Going to give up that quick?

i took the cams off and played with the valves. its in the lower end. which is why i asked about what could cause the gear to move like it is. i almost moves about half a tooth of from the left to right side then snaps back.
    so i have

A clicking or clunking sound could be produced by unbalanced carbs.

Isn't there some kind of spring or something in the Cam gear drive assembly that causes a clicking noise?

I thought I read that somewhere....???

im was thinking that too. cause i have the cams off. and its still doing it. when it clicks/clunks/knocks/pings/whatever. i can see the cam gear spring forward and back.
kinda weird. still dont know whats causing it. now i have to know. going to take the head off next. i cant see anything binding , now its personal.
